  • My idea of a good cutout...tell me what you think

ok I dont like hot engine fumes roaming freely underneath my car, I like them to get the hell out at the back..so

I think the best way to do it (right) would be to put it right before the muffler then instead of just having the Y-pipe let fumes out next to your gas tank.. put another Y pipe at the end of your muffler and connect it with the cutout...

Good idea, you've been doing some thinking...

Depends on what you want. Sound, or less restrictive exhaust?

For sound, I don't see any problems. For a less restrictive exhaust, it depends on what else is in your system, upstream of the cutout. If you still have the original s-pipe coming off the cat, and the stock i-pipe, putting the cutoff after all that stuff won't help as much as putting it before.

If you open all that stuff up, then the muffler would probably be the most restrictive piece remaining, and the cutout would around it would help. I've heard it said, but can't prove or disprove it, that the s-pipe is the single most restrictive piece in the system.

If you have dual exhaust you can run a pipe between the I pipe and passanger side exit pipe just before the muffler. Similar to your idea, but less pipe. I have seen a bunch of V8 guys do that as a permanant setup, without a plate to close. Haven't heard it, but it does address your concern about venting the gases from underneath the car.

That is how my exhaust is set up except it is a single inlet outlet muffler then has a second pipe attached to the dump.
