  • Bad day at a shop

    Hi guys,

I received my ls1 magnaflow exhaust and cat and took it to a local car shop that said they had a mandrel tubing bender. He said he could bend the s pipe with 3 inch stainless tubing and install it for around 200 bucks. This was over the phone, and i never ordered the slp install kit because he said he could build the same thing.

Anyway, when i get to the shop he pulled my car in to the lift, then swung the door open. I know my doors and saw it was to close to the lift when he opened it and caught it right before it hit the lift which would have scratched all the way up the door and probably dented it.

I showed him the system and the cat and of course he started saying how it was too big. He looked at the cat and said "the law only lets us do certain things and so i'll see if i can put this on legally" and that is was too small for the car so it will go bad really quickly. Then said the 3" was too much, I told him yeah it may be overkill, but it's what i want on and maybe i'll get a turbo in the future. He said even for a turbo it is too big and it will f*** up the car. (over the phone i told him what i wanted to do and said he also sold the same cat and it would work great)

Then when he was lifting it he put the braces under the rectangle metal piece where the fron fender gets hooked down. I didnt double check where he was lifting cause i figured he had a little knowledge of what he was doing. When he lifted the cars weight on the small pieces one folded flat over breaking the fender panel away from the rectangle piece underneath the car, the other side was bent out which pushed the fender out about an inch.

I didnt realize til later that he had placed the lift on the flimsy metal pieces. I noticed the passenger side fender was sticking out an inch and i did a double take. Then i looked under and saw it was bent over. Then i saw that the other side was f***** too.

In the meantime, the "mandrel bender" , which i asked if he had and whether the bend was under pressure keeping the same id, turned out to be a regular tubing bender that kinked as well as restricting it by nearly 1" overall on the bend. He also bent regular tubing and said that it would now be about 250.00 and if i wanted the bung welded in it would be another 30.00. He told me that since he had started bending the tubing i had to let him finish.

Long story short i told him where he could shove what and how hard ( i had been keeping cool so far ), then i grabbed a hammer and straigtened out the bent over piece (it pulled the fender back in nicely), lowered my car, and left.

I will now be ordering the slp install kit, going to an exhaust shop that i know and trust for a fair price and get it done in a week or so.

I posted this experience because it seems to be a recurring thing to me. I have never had luck at any shop period (except les schwab tire) and i have had this car since new in 00. Be sure that when you take your car somewhere you have it clean, make them walk around it checking for damage, and remind them of all the little things about your car (taking ramps at angles, huge doors, etc.). I figured this guy would know that camaros have big, heavy doors and this guys almost gave me a world of headaches.

Also, if your younger or soft spoken, have someone go with you. I basically had to intimidate this guy (i'm nearly 6'3" and 220 and he was 5'7", round and 220) in to getting my car outta there.

I am also going to put a screw in to the fender panel, where it broke off, this weekend and it will be good as new.

When it was up he also started saying my pinion was leaking as well and he could rebuild it for 600 bucks and blah blah. Just be careful when you go to a new shop for the first time.

    Brad

    sorry for the long post

Sorry to hear that... I had took my car to Monroe muffler over a year ago and had the exhaust in the car. The guy briefly looked at it and said for me to leave it with them... I had took a vacation day to do this too. Anyways i left it with them and they never called me with a price estimate (I had the SLP s pipe and a Magnaflow 3inch system) and well the car sat there all day. They never looked at it again. It never moved so I came back and I was like wtf you guys never even looked at it again... and they are like we are very sorry and to come back. I said well first off I aint coming back cause I dont live in the area (was hanging with a friend) and then I was like why the hell am I going to come back if no one is gonna look at it? I just got my car and left. I was so pissed.

Anyways I just called another shop and they said they dont know if they can do it... *freaking give me a welder damnit*. they wont even touch my cat... he said he didnt weld cats. WTF Is that???

I went to another shop and well, they didnt have a welder but they re adjusted it for me and added a hanger and overcharged me 100 bucks.

I am going down to this guy that lives about 4 houses down. He races sprint cars and I am sure could use the extra cash (and i know hes gotta have a welder over there)... so i will ask him to weld my cat on better (its already the hell on there just needs a better weld) and well, maybe put the ws6 exhaust on for me and take off my magnaflow.

Also I am 5ft 2 and female so i dont really intimidate too well... but I was so pissed at the monroe guys that I wrote a complaint letter cause they wasted my day and never got a reply.

i personally know a good bit about exhuast. i would never take my car to a shop. but some times you have too. i had mieneke do my s-pipe and just cat install. i had no sawzall to get it off with and a hacksaw wouldnt do it.

it took them freaking 4 hours. the only thing welded was te s-pipe. everything else was clamps and it still took 4 hours. i had to go back and show them how to do it.

well i got a sawzall now and ripped out their pipe as it wasnt mandrel bent and a madrel bent u bend on there.

but i went with a buddy to an exhuast shop cuz he wanted me to. i start talking to the guy and man he starts stuttering and dont know what to tell me. i was like dude dont get it done here.

he did it anyway. they charge him 300 for just the install and he wanted a cat back. they just gave him a magnaflow muffler w/ some tips.

its amazing how people can own or work at a exhuast shop and not know about exhaust.

these f#ckin mecahnics now a days don't want to install anything on your car if they have to break a sweat, they only wanna do the easy things and charge you a fortune. I hate it to when mechanics question why you want to install something on your car, i feel like if it isnt illegal for them to install a part, then shut up and install it. Thank god i have a friend of the family that works on cars as a side job, but he can only do so much.

exactly, i myself am currently working at a restoration shop, where breaking a sweat is mandatory. a few months ago we brought in another wrench and he was so scared to get dirty.
every 15 minuteas he was running to go wash his hands, he was scared to do oil changes because it might dirty his uniform. needless to say he didnt last too much longer.
as for your shop experiances, i know that really sucks, i hardly use other shops, now its either i do my own work or its not done.
try looking for hole in the wall places, they usually have some honest folk working there, or at least that was my experiances with my older cars.
if you know anyone that builds go karts or sand rails, might wanna check there too, they have pipe benders, welders etc. and can always use the extra cash since the majority of thier projects take weeks to accomplish
I will take on all comers...or come on all takers!!! Whichever you prefer.

You need to get that estimated right away and take several pictures of it and his lift.

Then file a civil lawsuit if he refuses to pay you for it. You need to be in a safe side just in case he backs off or refuses.

This is why I will do whatever it takes to do the work myself. If I don't know about it, I'll learn it. If it can't be fabbed by someone else without the car, it isn't that important to me.
I made the same mistake you did... I assumed a garage knew how to properly lift a car. I took my car to a garage to have them fix a flat and they did the same thing... raised the car by the fender tab and broke the fender off. When I took the owner to court after his refusal to pay for it, he skipped town and closed the garage. Cost me close to 1000 bucks to get the fender replaced and painted.
I know it's a pain to do it yourself, but that's where the pride comes from for me.
You can do a perfectly good exhaust system install without welding. I clamped my Borla on my last car and drove it 30,000+ miles without a leak or other problem. So it is possible for the average home mechanic to do the install.

Sorry to hear about your car, man... hope everything turns out well for ya.

Yep, I hate shops also. I took my car into minieke to get a vehicle inspection and they sat there for 30 min looking at my SLP CAI, saying they couldn't pass my car because it was illegal. then they tried to tell my 3 of my tires were bad and they had to replace them, plue the 2 back tires weren't the proper speed rating. They also told me that a little hole in the pipe going into the muffler had a hole in it and they had to fail it because of that. Needless to say they wanted to charge me $600 to fix this exhaust and change the tires. I told them to go stuff it up their tailpipe(exact words) paid them the 12 bucks for the inspection and took the car to the guy that has done all of my parents cars for 15 years, he replaced one tire and passed the car.

I will never deal with minieke again. from now on I will lay under my car on the concrete and do my own damn work.
