Small noise, now a LARGE noise. (Solved)

To start, I don’t know crap about engines, so... Don’t laugh TOO hard. ^_^

I have a 97 RS, and it has around 170k on it (I got it around 150k). It makes some noise when it first starts (nothing abnormal at all). Sounds like a bit of lifter noise or something.

However, I got board last Saturday, and made a trip to Home Depoe, and Autozone.

Built a simple CAI, and appears to be working good. I am getting a few extra MPG, and the noise it makes AFTER it is warmed up is nice (a good growl at low RPM). But that lifter noise at start is now VERY loud and can clearly be heard from the cab.

This normal for an engine of this age with a CAI? Should I even have the CAI on there? I asked my normal tech, and he was about as useful as a doorstop.

I will make a recording tomorrow and post it.

I check my oil fairly regularly (old habit), but I have not since the install; I'll do it just to see. But I'm fairly sure it's topped off.

I used Valvoline (one of the performance blends) and a "Power Punch" additive on my last change if you’re interested.

It does make the noise when I have no intake on at all. But ya, it DOES sound like that!

When I clean my engine bay from time to time, should I just try to avoid the filter, or should I cover it all together?

EGR, ticking nose before engine warms up.Cai=louder. Normal. Every single car does it. unles you will do !EGR.

Talked to my tech, and he went "Oohhh, ya, bet that would do it. Hmm, probably would have caused that emisions code you got a while back too."
