I was talking to my mechanic today about puting on a 3" cat-back exhaust as well as a 3" catalytic converter. He said not to do it. he said that when slowing down, cold air will be able to rush up the exhaust, and when it hits hot air it'll cause it to explode "backfire" and damage or destroy my exhaust valves. is this true? is he full of $hit?

Actually it can happen with no cat and a high flow muffler it will suck air back in and warp the valves2002 M5 Bright Metallic Silver
*Fully loaded and modded

2005 GSXR 750
*Micron Serpent Race Exhaust *K&N Filter *Power Commander *Trying to hit 200 MPH!

1970 SS 454 Chevelle Cortez Silver
*It can pass anything but a gas station

Ok so if you leave you car outside in 30 degree weather, don't start it up and immediately rev it to red line.
Thats a extremely long way for cold air to travel through very hot pipes. While it maybe physically possible, its not going to happen.Keith - 99 'maro - White M5 - bumpstick and boltons - 13.65 @ 101 N/A

I agree. The only way that exhaust exits the pipe is because the pressure within the pipe is greater than atmospheric. Even at idle it is. Revving down from a high RPM will cause some reverberations in the flow, but it should never make it all the way to your valves.1995 Firebird 3.8 A4, 140,000 miles and going strong
Basically Stock, college=poor
Junior Mechanical Engineering Student: Milwaukee School of Engineering; Cpl, MN Army National Guard...just got promoted :)
