ok this kid i know keeps telling me that im actually loosing power from my car because of the magnaflow catback exhaust i put on...its for a 98 3.8L and its the catback listed for the 3.8...i say im not loosing power but he says i am....so am i or arent i?

you have a 3.8 catback...therefore you still have a cat converter that terminates in 2.25" ID (stock) from there it goes through a stock 2.25" ID S pipe and THEN it transitions to a 2.5" mid pipe and a 2.5" ID muffler inlet...with two 2.25" tail pipes outlets.
You are not losing power. You still have most of the back pressure as stock because of the stock components still on car (cat and s pipe) but you do have a high performance (hi flo) muffler. This is better than stock (more efficient) but louder than stock...too loud for most 'new car' buyers and production vehicle noise emissions standards.
When your friend tells you not to put 8mm spark plug wires on your car...or to not swap in a K and N air filter....refer to this thread.
