  • Exhaust Naming Conventions

    A few clarifications:

    The short pipe with the o2 sensor, after the cat, yet before the "s" bend, what is this pipe called or is it all still the "S" pipe?

    Where does the "I" pipe reside? Is that the pipe after the "S" bend to the muffler?

    The I-pipe is the straight part after all that turning back and forth off the back of the cat.

    My s-pipe starts right off the tail end of the cat. Well about 1" off the back. Not enough pipe to consider it separate.

    What year is yours?

      Sorry, 2000 camaro

      I am new to the Fbody with modifying the exhaust, so as I read "S" pipe, "Y", "I", I really don't know which components everyone is talking about.

      Maybe a better inquiry is, from the exhaust manifold, please name the components in order as they appear out to the tips.

      Appreciate some assistance.

        No problem. Even the folks that have been here for a while sometimes disagree on what portion of the pipe is called the s-pipe.

        Ok, the two manifolds are connected by a y-pipe to the cat (looks like a fork in the road if you are going from the cat forward to the manifolds). After the cat is the s-pipe. The long pipe is the i-pipe. The i-pipe goes over the axle, into the muffler, then the tips. Sometimes the part going over the muffler has been called an s-pipe, but this is not the terminology used most often.

        Also I sent a diagram post to the top, which will probably help too. Wasn't sure how to put a link to it, so I just did a ttt.
