  • buying oxygen sensors..

hopefully I'm gonna change my O2 sensors this weekend....What do you guys think is the best O2 sensor? I think I'm gonna buy Bosch. At Pep Boys i can get them for $24.99 each, or Advanced for $19.99 each...... I'm not sure if the prices are for different type Bosch sensors or not. Which one should I go for?

I'm also gonna buy the socket for it, that's $11.00.......duh

What should I do when removing them? I know I need wd-40 or such to loosen them up first.
As far as the plug downstream of the sensor, I know that unclips..does the wire on the new sensor just hook into it, or do I have to do some splicing?
Thanks for the help guys. I just wanna get everything straight before i buy the sensors and put them in.

As far as removing them, heat them and the manifolds up slightly by running the motor for a minute or two. After this, mine came out easy. I didn't have to spray any penetrating oil. The ones I bought had antiseize already on them so I didn't have to add any and it actually said not to.

I can't help on the brand choice. I went with AC Delco replacements, same as factory. In case you want to do this GMPartsDirect has them for about 1/2 the price(before shipping) as the dealer.
    Delco PN = AFS-22
    GM PN = 25162753

so i guess i have to undo the clip and put the wire up in the socket to start turning it out...is that what i should do with the wire?

What about the clip? Do i undo the wire from the old sensor that's going into the clip and put the new one right in it, or do i have to splice the wire from the new sensor to an old wire coming out of the clip? Hope this isn't confusing

Yes, very easy install. You don't even need to get the O2 wrench. A regular deep well socket will work fine. The wire simply plugs in.

Thanks guys.....I'll be tackling that shortly. I may buy the socket, I may not. If i end up buying it, I might resell it on here for someone else that wants it.

done...wasn't too bad except trying to find swivel extensions so i could actually get to them. driver side was a sinch......passenger side took a little time...I didn't notice a difference right off the bat.....but i think the car had to adjust to em..Not a noticeable difference but with 105K on the stock ones it was time for some new ones. My passenger side one was burnt black. I might be selling my socket, so if anyone is interested, let me know.

I wish I had caught this post earlier. The 3.4's have a one wire O2 sensor...it's a data sending wire only. With a high flow exhaust system, the O2 sensors don't always get hot enough to give a good reading. A few weeks ago, I finally installed two 3-wire O2 sensors (Bosch) that I have had for a while but never installed. I got teh harnesses from GM to hook them in. The difference in the two setups is that the 3-wire is a heated O2 sensor. In this case, the O2 sensor will give a better reading at all times resulting in better engine performance. The O2's are not cheap though...cost around $50 each and the wiring harnesses are about $12 each, but they are not manditory. This mod seems to give better power throughout the rpm range, but I have not dynoed to get a true power change. Throttle response is a lot better and gas mileage is better. If you are in the market for new O2's and have a single wire O2, I would suggest this if you have the money. If nothing else, you will get better has mileage.

98's have 3 O2 sensors on the exhaust, pepboys quoted me
                      79.99 for 1
69.99 a piece for the other two.

so saving $40 plus tax doesn't sound too bad.
