I looked last night and I think that if I move the piping down a little a full 3" piece might fit. we will soon see :D

Well I tried to put a 3" pipe in place of the stock bent pipe. And I get to report the news that with a little manipulation it WILL fit!! :D

            3" pipe that fits

Here is an explination of what I had to do to get this to fit. First I went to home depot to buy everything. I bought way more than what I was going to need because I figured that it would take a few tries to get this all to fit. This is what I bought a 3" piece of pvc that was 10' long, One 45 degree "street" elbow, 1 45 degree regular elbow, 3 - 3" rubber couplings, 1 4" to 3" coupling, PVC cement, plastic weld from pepboys, and the stp filter from autozone ( part # SA6543).

The first thing that I did was take off the lower section under the bumper that will open up to the are in front of the wheel well. This is were the filter is located. I had to cut about a 4" long piece of 3" pipe to add to the first 45 degree elbow so that the filter would slide in ( it fits perfictly) then at the end of that 45 degree elbow I put the first 3" rubber coupling. Then I took off the rest of the stock air intake components. I took the regular 45 degree elbow and cut one of one flared ends off (SAVE THIS YOU WILL NEED IT) next I put the 45 elbow on top of the TB and kinda "angled it" to go the way that I want it to. Then took a marker and eye balled the angle that I needed to cut, It ended up being about a 50 degee cut. Then with this extra stuff cut off the elbow allmost fit. So I had to cut a little more off ( about .5") and smoothed it all up with a dremel. Now you remember that flare that I cut off of the 45 elbow? I took the dremel and started to match it up to the other elbow. I had to basicly cut a 50 degree angle out of the flare to match the part that I cut on the elbow. Then after matching it all up to fit in the engine bay I used the PVC cement to kinda "hold the parts in place and then used that plastic weld to weld it all together. It is Vey stong and will not break. if you look at these pictures you can kinda get a better idea of what I am taking about.

            elbow with intake attachment
            elbow2

Then after I made the elbow I got the 4"-3" coupler and cut off the 3" part right at the ridge that strats to go to a 4" piece of rubber. This is the rubber piece that is on the intake and the elbow that I made. It is a perfict fit. then I cut about a 5" piece of pvc to attach to the other end of the elbow this piece is for the IAT sensor. I had to drill out a hole to get this to fit but it was not hard at all. Then at the end of this piece I have a 3" rubber coupler. The reason why I did this was because I needed to change the angel just a little bit to get the 3" pipe to fit betewwn the radiator and the ABS mod. The rubber piece gave me more freedom to move and manipulate everything to get it to fit. At the Other end of the 3" rubber piece is the piece that fits between the radiator and the abs mod. You have to put this piece in from the right hand side of the radiator ( where the filter is) once I got it through it matched up right with the rubber coupling that is after the IAT sensor. You remember that 3" rubber coupling that I put on the first 45 degree "street" elbow? well now you can put that rubber piece on the other end of the 3" pipe that you just put in.

            the 3" piece that fits

            Then you are done :D

I hope that this helps anyone out that want to do this themselves.

Gee now that I have all the angles down I guess I can make a fiberglass "copy" of it, make it two pieces that just push onto one another. And sell it. Would any one want to buy a fiberglass CAI for a 96-97 (maybe even 98, they have the same angled intake right) :D :D

Oh ya I forgot to mention that IT SOUNDS BAD A$$!!! you can hear it sucking hard core!

anyone who has the K&N FIPK will know what I'm talking about here....

There is a plastic "lip" that is in the way for the K&N FIPK and you actually need to cut a small wedge off to make it fit. it doesn't interfere with your radiator... it's just extra plastic your shaving down. If you're trying to squeeze 3" piping through there, i'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about. Hope this helps with the fit for anyone else who would like to try out the home depot FIPK :D

I know exactly what you are talking about, it is part of the fan shroud. I didn't have to cut or shave mine because I had enough play between the two to fit the 3" pipe. and now none of the piping is moving. :D

So far I am happy with the setup. my car breathes a little better on the top end. Before I did this I raced my cousins 84 vette, he had me by about 3-4 cars at the end of the 1/4. Then I raced him after I put it in and he only had me by 1.5-2 cars. It was harder for him to pull on me on the top end. So I am happy with it, now I just need to decide what to do next. I just saw the home made intake It's tight. I was going to tell you that a 3" pipe will fit between the abs and radiator, but I see you already figured it out. Looks good reminds me of my car :D I have almost the same set up. I went to home depot and took my intake apart in the parking lot and kept going back and forth with my stock intake parts and home depot parts till I knew I had enough parts to make it work and then I went home and put it all together. So anybody who wants to make your own cai go to home depot with a screw driver then go to town until you find somthing that will work. :D

yeah I was wondering what yours looked like...

for what its worth this is what mine looks like...

this is an older, I painted it, it does get pretty tight around the ABS unit, but still much better then stock or any aftermarket setup I have seen...

My IAt sensor is right infornt of my TB, probalbe not the best location, I am thinking of moving it down ot the filter.

I have seen others run 3 in. piping like mien down into the fender, but I don't see a big gain, I popped off the plastic piece under the fender to jsut allow a little more air circulation near the filter.

My setup may not be the best... but cost me $60 compared to $200 and I am happy with its performance

Doesn't fit or look as nice as a aftermarket CAI, but under my hood isn't exaclty show quality anyways.

FYI, a motor head that runs a garage here gave me some info on K&N filters..

quote "Take that off there ASAP"

K&N has oils in their filters, which in time can be sucked into the intake, and clog sensors, creating problems down the road..

makes sense.. i put my stock airbox back on (no more air sucking fun)

I fit was a consensus.... I would agree with you..

I have been running that filter on my car since 2000, 3 years and no sensor problems other then the 02 sensors, and oil pressure sensor, which i think are unrelated to the K$N, even took the upper intake apart on my car after having the filter on 4 2 years, saw nothing that looked to cause problems.

But I will agree there is a very very probable chance fo geting oil sucked inot the motor, especially after cleaning.

For the gains it gave me... compared to the problems it caused me I will keep it on. Not sure if others have had problems. But I feel its a riske worth taking on my 123,000 miled car.
