Here's the deal; I'm look to mod my car this summer with an air intake system, maybe NOS,and est. I planning to add little by little Hp to my car without a supercharger or turbocharger. I just installed a new exhaust system in my 3.8L and looking around at a few intake systems. After hearing from a few sources about how intakes or any other mods doesn't response well with the 3.8L. I'm afraid to spend money on mods that will not gain good results in horsepower and torque. I don't want to start off having the mindset of a ricer driver who spend thousands of dollars on their car thinking that it is fast. My goal is to beat GT rustangs and a few other slow v8's owners.
What do you gain from the two? I sorry but I'm new to the game when it comes down to modding a 3.8L. I don't want to spend money on stupid things that won't unlock my car potential
best thing to do would be to use the search function here and see what other people have done already and what is proven. There is a lot of info in here, and the other forums like gen tech and adv. tech that is only a couple clicks away. You could probably see 10-20 rwhp from the two depending on the types, and other mods, etc.
The search feature should be your new best friend ;)
I would say headers, cat, catback, intake like whisper lid, filter, minor suspension mods like lcas or go umi performance get basic package..good deal....and if you really want to get more into it I would do gears, and a tune. All that right there would make your car move quicker...just my opinion
I'd wait on headers until you have a power adder or something. The gain is minimal for the pain they are to install. Headers were the last thing I did to my car because it was like the last bolt on that I didn't have before going into the engine.
If you want to save money, get rid of the air silencer & replace with 3" pvc piping & coupler, shave the air lid fins, cut the bottom out of the air box & throw in a K&N, for about $60. Search for "Free mods" and you'll find all the information you need.
Alright when getting new exhaust should you chance out the manifold, catalytic converter, and every stock exhaust pipe to get the true performances? My next question; when getting a intake system you should get new sensors to read the new air-flow? Whisper lid how is it better than these
I know those kind won't work on my 98 because I have tubular manifolds, so I have to get a whisper lid. If you get a whisper lid, ram air, and a K&N filter you will see decent gains, especially with your new exhaust.
1998 White Camaro 3800, A4, MagnaFlow Cat-Back, Zexel & 3.42's, Jet Chip Stage 2, Whisper Lid, and Ram Air.

it all depends on how much money you wanna spend.... you can make any car fast with a decent pocket book... but if ur like most people on this board, you dont have a lot of cash.... ive done everything listed here with the exception of the silencer removal... just havent gotten to it yet... i even did the free ram air mod (FRAM) on my bird... ive noticed quite a bit of change just by doing these few things.... and all was pretty much cheap... the most expensive part was that damn k&n filter but it works wonders.... somebody correct me but isnt shaving the fins pretty much the "whisper lid"?? i could be wrong so dont quote me on that.... but anyways.. do what you do...

I want to think you guys for the feedback. I pretty much have a idea what needed to be done. My final question is; hp doesn't much s*** to me (because I'm not a ricers) but does the ram air, headers, and est improve torque?
