  • Good Idea Bad Idea build own cold air intake?

Ok i went to pep boys today for a new head light, while i was there i sae all these pieces to build your own "cold Air Intake" there was a thing that would go over the MAF and then an elbow wich could be bent and extented. seems to have everything i need..........anyone seen these, done these??
But mostly i want to know the diamiter of then MAF cause screw it its worth a shot to try n do if i can get it it should be around 100. sure as hell beats 250 for the whisper lid and "slp intake" please info....

it is a good idea to build your own considering cost but this elbow you are describing seems like to me a rubber dryer hose sorta thing which isnt very good for flow. it should be a smooth curve into your throttle body, not bumpy

I made mine for like 50-70 bucks. intakehoses.com have 90* rubber elbows 4"to3" and then I bought a cone filter from autozone. took some 3" piping and ran it to the fender.

Thats what im talking about input and yes it will be a bumby ride and is kinda like a dryer hose, but probably going with 97 do you notice a diff? and back to the main question so i need a 4" from the MAF?

the tb is slightly smaller than 4" so you need the 4" to 3" 90* elbow. The piece holding the IAT sensor is the stock grommet.

hey 97rs did you have to bend the 3" pipe, or look that way in the picture?

also that website you mentioned is great

I had to put a slight bend in the pipe. If I kept it straight there was a lot of pressure against the fans and such. My dad owns an exhaust shop so I had no troubles bending it, ;)

Ya i went with the cobra head which points str8 down and with a 12" tube gets here on the 14th i hope that works, i was wondering how you got it all the way over to that side, i posted to picture of the cobra head i'm sure it will fit, then i got a really creative idea picture this run down all the way then forward to ( you kno where the "blk plastic thing that tells you when your scrapping the ground? do you?) run through that then put a slight bend up since there is clearence going up slight 45 degree up that way that plastic thing dont block that air if i just went str8 down? but the price would end up costn' about another 60 i mean i'm only at 60 for everything now but IF THE BLK THING SCRAPES SOMETIME ON DIPS THEN MY PIPE WILL PROBABLY.......................???? WHAT YOU THINK?

I have no idea what your talking about other than you are thinking about running straight down from the tb to the radiator air deflector. The least amount of bends the better. Bends slow air down.

Re: Good Idea Bad Idea build own cold air intake?

I have also tought about routing mine south instead of over to the fender whell. But instead of hiding it behind the front air valance that lets air get into the radiator, i thought of making a slip in the valance and putting a filter flush with the bottom of the radiator and lettign the cool air that heads toward the radiator also go into the air filter. Any ideas on this good/bad?

but thats what i'm talking about like your saying routing it towards the front of the radiator but then now i took into what 97rs said about more bends....think bout it i either go 12inch str8 down from the TB? or go 18inchs down then another 90* angel then about 18 inches forward then another 45* bend and about o lets say 4inches to reach "our" destination in front of the radiator?

OK SO PRO TO GOING THAT FAR: MORE AIR FLOW, COLDER AIR,...?

CON: AWHOLE LOT FURTHUR FROM TB, 2 MORE BENDS..........?

i mean i really need some advice i THINK infront of the radiator would be the better choice am i right?

not a better choice, all that long piping will be right there by the warm engine heating them up. Plus you got the bends and worry about water and debris hitting it. Best thing to do is copy the setup that SLP and K&N have by going to the fender where there is cool air.

Ok The Parts Came, The D*** Cobra Head Doesn't Fit, So I Bought Some Parts And Made A Temp One Unless You Think This Can Work?

This Will Have To Do Untill My 90* 4 To 3 Inch Comes In. Will This Intake????!! Look At Pic???

If Not I Will Run It South With The 90* About 12inchs From Where It Is With A Bigger Filter Unless There Wont Be Much Of A Diff. So Please Give Adivce!!!!!!!!
