My exhuast is overheating long story short bought a car dirt cheap 93 camaro 3.4 that was run hot, blown headgaskets and such. Had to rebuild the engine cause the rings pistons were damaged from the heat and the walls were scuffed. trying to work the bugs out of the car its running again and the exhaust is so hot that the pipes have a slight orange glow to them at night. The temp guage runs straight 180 but after the engine is shut down and restarted a few minutes later its 220 but thats not abnormal. no catalytic converter to clog has stock manifolds and muffler shop pipes that connect to the original exhaust where the cat was. Havent put a scanner or fuel pressure guage on it yet but im leaning to a fuel pressure regulator problem and excessively lean. what should the fuel pressure be? can i rebuild the regulator even though the service manual says no? what about an adjustable regulator anyone have any leads or suggestion on what direction to take never had a v6 f body and gm seems to have went out of their way to make it much more difficult than the tuned port v8s I have owned

Re: exhaust overheating GLOWING!!
GM has made it difficult to tune the V6 models. Many don't want to put time and effort into them because of the "cost vs. output". Not sure I agree with that, but I'm not tuner.
As for the over heating, I think you are on the right track being lean. No, you can't rebuild the regulator, but getting another one should not be a big deal. Your local auto store should have one. Ours are NON-adjustable and just fairly cheap. You could find an ADJ. one, but that will really depend on what you've done with the motor for mods. Stock motor, just go for the NON regulator.FirebirdV6.com/CamaroV6.com Administrator

Re: exhaust overheating GLOWING!!
when my bird bird was victomized in teh great fire of '03, the pass exhaust manifold turned bright orange. This was due to a y-pipe flange not fully seated & created a leak that wsn't able to be heard over the open y-pipe. I have heard of people rebuilding the fpr on third gen v6's, I'll do a search & post what I find, but mainly it's the seal that gets replaced.
edit: ok, all I was able to find so far was replacing the regualtor flap/valve thing. Use tamper resistant torx bits (they have a hole in them) to open up the fpr cover.Last edited by 3.4 slow to go; 04-18-2006, 05:05 PM.1978 Formula 461 in progress of being built

Re: exhaust overheating GLOWING!!
i made my fuel pressure regulator adjustable (i took it apart drilled a hole in the center of the cover, silver soldered a stainless nut over the center of the hole, found a thick fender washer with a hole smaller than the bolt i use for adjustment. since I have a lathe I turned a little of the threads off the bolt so part of it goes in the hole and centers the washer up. I upped my pressure from 35 to 50 (gauge is old maybe not so accurate) cut down on alot of heat but the manifold has a slight glow to it still after a drive but less than before. I dont have a scan tool. my check engine light is on constantly. I tried to jump the adl over (a to b) as the service manual said and retrieve codes no luck tried a cheap code reader thing as well no luck. put a vacuum guage on the intake and it reads 16 to 17 inches. i think should be a little higher at idle. sprayed brake and carb cleaner and wd 40 everywhere (dont try this at home kids) to try to rule out intake manifold leak and no change in idle or vacuum. Im thinking since i did do a rebuild that I may have the valves too tight followed the manual on valve lash settings ( 1 1/2 turns after all lash is removed) and watched each plunger as it moved from the retainer in the lifter. I did pump up the lifters and prime the engine with a drill prior to installation. The car runs too good to have major emission control issues like temp sensor, although the O2 sensors could be fouled because of antifreeze and the previous owner running the car hot enough to blow both head gaskets. anyone have a recomendation on a good scan tool hurricane katrina ruined alot of my electronic stuff and am starting over again thanks Bill

Re: exhaust overheating GLOWING!!
Honestly, your doing good with the trouble shooting. I'm wondering how much it would cost to go to a dealership to have them put it on the computer. That might be a small price to pay to get some insight. They don't need to fix it, but let them scan the computer to see what it thinks is going on.FirebirdV6.com/CamaroV6.com Administrator
