Newbie Exhaust Q

First off, I have an 1996 silver v6 camaro, COMPLETLY STOCK. My muffler recently fell off and I decided to go ahead and upgrade the exhaust system to something that would provide me with more power. I also considered doing a Turbo kit, but don't want to jump into anything prematurely.

My Question is what type of exhaust kit I could install now anticipating that I will install a turbo kit at a later date. Also anybody got any links/books that I could read up on to help me make educated decisions on the future upgrades of my car?

you can use any cat-back exhaust system you want. when or if you get a turbo, you can easily work the down pipe into everything later. as far as a book, they really don't make a book that tells you how to upgrade our cars. what I recommend, is go to your local book store that has an automotive section, and start selecting and buying. they make books on how to do different stuff, how stuff works and etc. you best bet if you are serious about learning how cars work and modifying, is to get an automotive book that explains what everything is and how it works. there is a book which i highly recommend, it is this book. Read that and you will have a good idea of whats going on. and last but not least, just read this message board and keep up with everything. spend some time and read the posts, you will learn a huge amount of info. you cant have a fast car unless you know whats going on and spend some time. Other members have come on this site with money and didn't get anywhere with what should have gotten them far. I even remember a member, who i consider a good guy now, who had a super charger and had all this money put into his car by someone else and ran slower than my stock times. No offense to this guy.

Well thanks, after reading around I figure that since my camaro will be just a daily driver with only a little-bit of show off, a turbo may be a bit more money without me really seeing the benefits over just adding a catback and a cold air induction kit. What do you think??

I think if you are really serious about racing, which you don't seem to be for this car, I would recommend you save your money from buying a turbo kit or supercharger, and just spend it on a cat-back, some type of intake kit like you mentioned, maybe some headers and just various other things to make your car look nice. Like maybe some strips, nice wheels, or even some lowering springs to give your car a better stance.

So I;m in Mi where we don't have emmisions so I have no need for a catalytic convertor(my current on is severly blocked). SO I was thinking of just running a straight pipe with an agressive sounding exhaust. What about that??

I've been intrestred in the tsp rumbler, but Like I said my stock cat is bad, do I really need a cat for the application of this kit??

Okay so then just a stragiht pipe into the TSP rumbler would do?? Also am I losing/gaining anything by not having a cat or am I just guilty of being cheap??

well there is more cfm flow without the cat, than with the cat, but there is not only louder sound, but a raspy almost rattling sound with nothing there, some people put bullet mufflers or glasspacks in place to cut down on rasp, also adds deeper tone, depending.

i found cats that flow 400 - 450 cfm, but a straight pipe will push much more than that, there is good info in the stickys at the top of this forum about that, design sizes and stuff.

i put my car on ramps and spent about 15 mins inspecting the design of my exhaust, coming up with ideas, then i took pictures and related them to posts that i had read here, and things i already knew from other exhausts i had done, then decided how to go about things.

i had a truck with no cat, and it was really loud, but i had a cherrybomb glasspack in place of the cat, it dulls the rasp a good bit.

just expect rasp without a cat, it sounds better with something there.
