  • Ebay vs K&N kits?

Money is a concern for me and so I'm wondering if there's really a difference between the K&N Fuel Injection Performance Gen2 kit that retails for about $200 compared to some of the intakes available on Ebay that are using K&N filters, selling for $40-50, plus shipping.
I know that the guarantee is a lot better for the entire K&N intake, but other than that are there any differences? Will the complete K&N kit provide less restriction than the cheaper Ebay intakes? I mean the intakes on Ebay that I'm talking about are using K&N filters afterall so how much difference could there really be? Thanks for any advice!

The big difference with the K&N FIPKII and the ebay kits is that the K&N relocates the filter basically down in the wheel well, away from all the heat from the engine. The colder the air, the more power the engine can make, and the ebay kits are going to have a higher air temperature than a K&N kit.

depending on their shipping prices, you could make your own tubed cai probably cheaper. buying some pvc tubing, a K&N filter, some paint and have fun.

unless you supply a link to one you are specifically looking at, all i can say is that most ebay kits are not more or less restrictive than K&Ns. mostly you paying for a name and sticker

there are very convenient and ignored stickies that supply an answer to both of your questions. I just added some things that will help you if you have already looked there cause your question has been very commonly asked here recently so i felt an need to update.

I read through those stickies and I've even taken a look at the modifications encyclopedia on camarov6.com. There's really not much mention about the difference between cheaper intakes and the K&N. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough but I haven't found any info on this topic specifically. Anyway, thanks for the info so far.
I've also seen that on the K&N website the dyno power gain is 18.29 hp for the V8. Anyone have any idea what the HP increase on a 3.4 litre might be? I'm guessing somewhere around 8-10 hp.

The only rel big differences is in the quality of materials used, quality of manufacturing, and quality of stuff like if it goes down into the fender or how well it mounts to the vehicle and were. you just need to make a judgement call. give me a link to what ebay intakes you are looking at and we'll go from there

Ok, I had the ebay kit on my '96 maro when i bought her, and I switched to an SLP kit. The performance difference is night and day. While both kits (FIPK and ebay) have their filters located in the fender well, the fipk included the tubing which the ebay kit does not. the tubing is what maximizes the air flow and that is what gets u the horsepower, so my answer is yes a true CIA, like the SLP or the FIPK is well worth it

Camaro862gcj hit the nail on the head. The biggest performance difference between the K&N and the ebay kits is the fact that the cheaper kits keep the filter in the hot engine bay. Ebay "CAI's" really just suck up hot under hood air. Stick with the higher priced intakes that either relocate the filter OUTSIDE the engine bay(K&N), or keep the stock air filter location, and add "ram air" scoops(SLP).

I`ll post exactly what I`m talking about so we can all be on the same page.

The following is the Ebay intake kit with K&N filter:
                    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Camar...ayphotohosting

and the following is the K&N complete intake kit:
                    http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...Prod=57-3010-1

If you look at the pic in the Ebay the filter looks like its beneath the engine bay. Does that look low enough to you guys to get at cooler air? Thanks again!

                      Re: Ebay vs K&N kits?

I would defenetly go with the RAM AIR SLP kit or the K&N FIPK those cheap Air Filters on Ebay aren't all that safe so beware

you can very easily make your own intake, just look at the pic you see on other kits, go to www.intakehoses.com buy the parts and make it yourself. probably $70 if you buy a k&n filter to go on end of it.

                        the 3.8 uses a 4" to 3" 90 degree elbow, i don't know what size the 3.4 is.

i have made kits myself for like 5 of my own cars and three or so friends.

                          Re: Ebay vs K&N kits?

I picked up a cheapy CAI from Ebay just to run with for a few weeks, because when I bought my car the factory air box was missing completely, and was running without a intake or filter, no good... I didn't really notice any power gain from the intake, but as I said and others said before they are more of a show piece then anything.

I just got done ordering my SLP dual filter kit. Can't wait to install that!

I just checked out the dual cold air filter kit on the SLP website. That thing looks pretty sweet, but still way too expensive...I just spent $700 on tires so I'm trying not to spend much on the Camaro these days. I think I might just do what titefyrbird suggested and make my own air intake kit from pieces on that website. Anyway thanks for all your advice, I'll be sure to stay away from the Ebay kits.

CAI definitely isn't just for show on our cars. In conjunction with an exhaust the SLP and K&N intakes have consistently showed gains of around .2 in the quarter mile above the stock air box with a paper filter.
