  • Forced Intake Idea

So I had an idea on how to force more air into the intake. I was thinking of putting a fan in the intake tube, after the the airbox, but before the mass air flow sensor. This was the fan I was thinking of using

I figured this would be doing the same thing as the Tornado only it would force more air into the throttle.

The only problem I think I would encounter with this idea would be that the MAF Sensor might not let the air be forced in, it will take what it needs and thats it.

I would appreciate some feedback on my idea to let me know if it's a good idea or just plain stupid.

    I have a 1998 Firebird 3.8L

Like I said I would appreciate any feedback, if it's a stupid idea let me know. I was just looking for a way to force air into the throttle. Maybe i'll just buy a tornado.

I have owned the tornado before So I know for a fact that it works. Maybe not horse power wise, but it will def. give you more MPG. On my old car I got 18MPG stock and 20MPG w/ the tornado.

I know I may sound really stupid asking this, but I'm just wondering why would this idea not work. I was thinking it would be along the same lines as a blower. I'm just trying to get as much air flow as possible.
Again I apologize if I sound stupid I'm just not really sure who else to ask.

i think its all sumed up with vipers post. if you want to force more air in, buy a supercharger or turbo.

that fan idea will not do anything at all if anything it will block air from getting in.

start you car and stick your hand over the air filter tube when it running....... do you really think that little 12 volt computer fan can push out more air then that?

now think about that at 5000 RPM lol

Ya thats a good point, I appreciate your patience and help. I did not mean to sound like a dumb ***, I'm just trying to get more air flow in my car. I just did the free ram air mod and i thought of that while i was doing it.

I have another question though, do they make a smooth bellow for the 98 3.8L?

Don't feel bad, you're learning and that's what matters. We've all asked stupid questions at some point in time. Anyway, companies don't make a smooth bellow but you may be able to find one someone has made on ebay or just go to home depot like i did and buy a smooth piece of rubber tubing.

get a nice ram air intake, like the austin super sucker or ram air hood.

That'll shove way more air in than a fan or tornado

I love my functional ram-air hood.. its carbon fiber. the only bad thing about it is air has to loop around inside the hood before it reaches the intake.
I am almost maxing my injectors, and have quite a bit of intake air according to the scanner. I'm thinking of mods/improvements..
I wonder how a Ultra-Z hood is constructed!

                            Re: Forced Intake Idea

oh yah, and I removed my air conditioner. The bottom of my airbox is cut out, so air comes into my engine bay via fog lights and the regular stock intake areas on the grill/bumper. The air hits my coolant radiator and goes straight up into the airbox. I still need to come up with new mods/improvements... but there is only soo much/so far you can do/go with N/A. Its not like my engine needs alot of air, unless for gas mileage..
Its not like I'm getting anywhere near any kind of boost. Its just 1 bar/atmospheric pressure

                              Re: Forced Intake Idea

I have a 2000 3.8v6 - I was thinking of putting the fog lights in the openings in the grill & running a split pipe from the manifold to both fog light holes putting a cone style K&N filter on the end. I've haven't looked into my idea much I figure the wiper fluid container may need moved (maybe putting in a smaller one) and probably moving the battery since it takes up all the space on the left side. There isn't much room down there & it might require drilling some holes for the pipe.

                              or

I would like something like this, but there isn't much room for it either.

This may be a dumb idea, but its just an idea as of now - it hasn't been looked into thoroughly or measured at all.:naughty:
