Muffler shop - cat

Ok so i have a 01 Firebird and that had the cat replaced a couple months ago. Now the SES light came on again and when I took it to my muffler shop the guy told me $275 for a high flow cat. He said a normal cat would get screwed up after a couple months and would need replaceing and said thats whats wrong with the one thats on it now.

The code its pulling is P0142 and i think this could be the reason but seems like a high price for a cat. Is there a certian cat that our cars need? Should I just order a specific cat off the internet and then have them weld it in? Any recomendations of what cats would be a good fit? If i'm not mistaken the inlet is 3in and outlet is 2.5in, could I get a 3in/3in and still use the stock exhaust, temporarly? I don't have the $$$ to put a cat back system on yet and have to fix this ses light for inspection.

Ok, $275 for a high flow cat installed is a rip. get one off the internet, catco is good. there is no reason why your car should be destroyed in that short of time unless your not telling use something. you will need a 3"in/2.25" out but you could get a 3"in/out and have him put a reducer on it to fit your 2.25" piping.

the factory CATs are pretty crappy.

just fyi, might be too late now but emissions equipment is under factory warranty for 7 years 70k miles mine went otu and dealer replaced it even though I was out of the factory warranty.

But if its been modifired I don't think they will do it.



As for high flo cat, that is a little high on the cost, and they sometimes cause bad readings on the post CAT o2, you probably are seeing that I doubt you killed it. You likely need a regular CAT or program out your post CAT o2, or get an o2 sim.

Ok so I got a new cat put on at a different shop, 200 for the cat and the install, its high flow 3inch in and out. However the guy at the shop said that when he went to change it the one that was on there was insanely hot and that it shouldn't be even close to that hot. He told me to take it to a mechanic and have them look at it because he thought something wasn't right and my car wasn't burning all the fuel and that would cause me to burn up a cat.

Does this sound legit?

I'm going to change plugs tonight and see if that helps it but if it doesn't what else should I check?

I'm betting it has something to do with the P0142 code. any ideas???
