  • Flowmaster 80 series review

This is a review of the 2.5 inch Flowmaster 80 series muffler. My car is a 1996 Pontiac Firebird with the Y87 performance package and an automatic transmission. It is completely stock except from the muffler back.

I bought this from my local muffler shop called Custom Exhaust. The muffler was $122 dollars. The labor and custom made pipes were $77. I just had him make 30 degree slash cuts on the ends of the pipes instead of messing with tips.

I will start off by saying that this muffler sounds 1000 times better outside of the car. Inside it doesn't sound very good in my opinion. It loses all of its rumble that makes it sound like a v8. Outside on the other hand it sounds excellent, even at full throttle (it sounds like a v8, I've had many people comment on it sounding like a v8 as well so its not just my opinion). There is almost no rasp at all. There is only rasp for a fraction of a second when the car is shifting at full throttle. Other than that theres no rasp to be heard. Also, when there is rasp its very quiet. Its noticeable yes, but I wouldn't call it ricey at all. I never rev it above 3500 rpms in neutral so I don't know what the rasp sounds like when its not in gear.

I will post a soundclip soon and update this post. I might also throw in a picture just so you know what it looks like.

If you have any questions post here or feel free to contact me on AIM.

    Re: Flowmaster 80 series review

i have the same muffler on stock pipes.. and i like it. I do however have a 5 speed and it seems to have more rasp then the automatics due to the time between shifts. for the price it sounds great to me. but i have to agree its ten times better on the outside. but any rpm above 3k you will have some rasp when shifting. but hey, its a v6 and it will always be... i dont want someone to take it for a v8. it is what it is... atleast i save at the pump.

Alright I got a video up finaly. I think its a decent representation of what it sounds like in real life. Its a little deeper in real life (especially at the higher rpms). But, it shows the basic sound well.

My 3.4 also soudns good with the 80 series. I gutted my cat so its a little deeper. eric v6, 325 is a bit much. I got mine done for $185. I will agree it sounds weak on the inside but outside its different!

Yeah, mine was exactly $199.20 for everything. And the inside sound isn't so bad anymore. It kind of grows on you.

Also what do you mean by piece by piece. I only have replaced from the muffler back. The rest of the pipes are the stock ones meaning 2.25 inch from the cat to the muffler. The muffler cost me 120 ish and the prices of custom making the two pipes and installation was around 80.
