So I've heard that i can just remove my cat and get some hp. i've got the 3.8 running probably around 215hp now. If i were to take off my cat, first off..how would i go about doing so, and second, would i gain some hp? i mean..how much?

Re: Illegal..maybe...but worth it?
just unclamp it or if its welded take it to a shop and have them put a straight pipe in its place(what i did, since mine was welded on one side and not on the other) you'd gain a FEW horses(not sure the exact #) from what ive heard, i felt a difference when i ditched mine, downside is it is a bit more raspy up top but i heard, which i plan on doing, that if u put a bullet muffler in its place it will take away some of the rasp.\"there are things known, and things unknown, and inbetween are the doors\"-jim morrison

http://www.cardomain.com/id/99NBMCamaro

Re: Illegal..maybe...but worth it?
First off, what do you have done to your car to get 215 hp?? You realize stock our cars dyno like 160-180hp right....
Next, all you need to do is put a piece of straight pipe where the cat was. Any shop that doesn't mind taking the cat off a car can do it. Let me warn ya, a lot of shops are gonna say "no" to you doing this though cuz they can get in trouble. Another option is to go with a hi-flow carsound cat in its place.

Re: Illegal..maybe...but worth it?
i know, i haven't dyno tested my car, so i'm just guessing...shot in the dark. I have a cold air intake and dual exhaust..i figured i might be somewhere in that range. I know i may be wrong though.
As far as installing the straight pipe...is that something i can do by myself fairly easily, or should i have a shop do it...and how much is that going to cost me?

Re: Illegal..maybe...but worth it?
id recommend going with a 3" high flow, for three reasons. Dont have to worry about passing inspections, hp gain is going to be 99% of the same as straight pipe, and is going to better.http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2245261 Green 1997, 105k, all stock except for Z28 front springs, Air shocks in the rear, home made coolant recovery tank, home made battery hold down.

Re: Illegal..maybe...but worth it?
Its not hard if you have the right tools, i went from stock to highflow to a dyno max bullet now. a sawzall is really all you need, a few sockets too. its welded on both sides so youll have to cut it off. stock y-pipe(before cat) is 3 inches, the s-pipe(after cat) is 2 1/4 inches so youll need a reducer.
without the cat def makes the most power, out of all the setups.2002 35th Anniv. Re: Illegal..maybe...but worth it?
There's always the option of gutting the cat. If you have inspections, you can usually get away with just gutting it, still get some gains, and it's seen as legal.~97 3.8L V6 Camaro~

Re: Illegal..maybe...but worth it?
i'm assuming i would still get more performance gain through a straight pipe though over gutting the existing cat? If i were to replace with a straight pipe, 1. how much would it cost me to have it done
2. Would there be anything else that i should do to get ready for this? or is it alright stand alone. The only real mod i have on my car is a cold air intake by K&N. i have the Y87.
