what exactly do you mean by raspy?? older cars didn't have cats, and they sound great to me, what is it that sounds so bad?

      Re: Illegal..maybe...but worth it?

My cat clogged on me a while back so I just cut everything off from the cat-back and built my own exhaust, but before I was able to get the new exhaust on, I drove around for a while with basically open headers and I thought it sounded great... much too loud of course, because of the location of the new opening, but the quality was in my opinion very good, I think that if you go with hollowing out your cat, it would be well worth it to install a pipe to go through it, or what I suggest is to simply cut the cat out and weld or clamp a pipe in it's place. If you don't know a welder, just use a pipe that has an inside diameter the same as the outside diameter of the y-pipe before the cat, and then use u-shaped clamps to crimp it on, and then use a reducer to match the diameter of the cat-back exhaust. all of which you could probably find at your local auto parts store. and as for power, a descent exhaust system will make up for the torque lost by removing the cat.

You will not lose torque, youll most likely make more throughout the entire rpm range. If you were running and open y pipe verse a cat back, yes you would notice the torque shift. a high flow and no cat will make very similar power, in a very similar manner. low end torque is not another reason to buy a highflow cat. you will need a o2 sim though.

a gutted cat does sound bad/raspy. i assume its becuase the exhaust expands and then is shrunk back down. this also slows your exhuast flow.

this is why i use a dynomax bullet instead, straight pipe would be very similar.
