  • IAT sensor replace? "thermastat"

I bought a 180 drilled thermastat, I was going to install it and saw this..

"For 2001-2002 Models an 18KOhm resistor must be placed in the IAT sensor to keep the PCM happy"

    http://www.angelfire.com/my/fastcar/powerstat.html

Not sure why I would need to replace it? What does the resistor do, advance timing?

The resistor tells the computer that the incoming air is cooler than is actually is...thus slightly advancing the timing. Ebay jerks sell the resistor in many of forms. They usually make a huge black box and guarantee a 12-15hp increase, and charge anywhere from $5 to $30 (depending on the size of the jerk selling it). In actuallity, it's a $0.25 resistor that can be bought at Radio Shack, but save your quarter for a parking meter...because it really doesn't make any huge difference with our cars.
The 180* thermostat is a whole different animal though. I'd definately recommend it~!

Just do the thermo. The resistor is basically worthless.

the resistor is a hokes. you do not need it. I would actually recommend not doing it. altering something to lie to your computer will only make it not run as well. Might not be something you'll notice but it will.

I've been wondering that same thing for a while about a resistor. Guess I won't worry about it now. Is it ok if my temp guage doesn't work all the time? I mean it rarely works and when it does it's only for like a day or two. Is this ok or did I put it in backwards or something?
