  • Running exhaust forward?

Ok weird question... I am putting a 95 3.4 into a 72 Opel GT. If you don't know what that is - it looks similar to a mini stingray Corvette. For weight distribution, the engine sits very near the firewall and the stock exhaust manifolds are interfering with the foot box on the drivers side. The Opel pedals are very close to begin with so I would rather not cut into this area.

I am contemplating switching the manifolds from right to left and routing the exhaust toward the front of the car and then down and under the engine and exiting out the rear like usual.

I do not have any accessories installed on the front of the engine right now - but I imagine the exhaust will have to be routed around the alternator and power steering pump.

Has anyone seen this done before? Any thoughts?

i've seen it on a few race cars where they run the exhaust right out the front grille. how did the original engine route the exhaust? is there any way of moving the engine forward?

Dude, I'm watching Spike's PowerBlock as I type, and they just did something similar to the Ranger they're working on. I'd say go ahead and do it. On Spike, they flipped and switched the headers around. So their exhaust was going forward and up. You might have to do some modding to the headers, but go for it.

What do you mean you were watching Spike's PowerBlock? Is that someone on the site who I may be able to contact or who may have pictures?

I had thought about cutting and rewelding the existing exhaust manifolds but I have not heard good things about rewelding the stock manifolds. Someone said you had to arc weld them with nickle rod but sinse the cast manifolds are so porus I am not sure this is the route to go.

I could use a header flange and some weldable steel fittings (90's and "T's") and make a custom setup but they would still be log type manifolds with poor flow capabilities.

Is there a set of block hugger or street rod headers for the 3.4 that exit straight down at the middle exhaust port? I have seen them for v8's but not for v6's. If this type of exhaust existed, I could run the pipe straight down inbetween the engine mount and the oil filter.

DUDE! totally paint a face on the front of the car and run the exhaust out the nostrils! that'd be the sweetest thing ever!

I love the Opels, my dad was showing me pics of his that he had in high school. I was thinking of getting one of those for my next project once I get my house. Except I was thinking the 3800 (b/c I already know so much about it). I saw an Opel on eBay once that someone had put an LT1 into. Awesome choice for a project car, man!!!

Ive seen a few turbo fbodys with a design like that, they called it forward swept headers?? a quick pic link

                http://www.force-fed-fabrications.co.../DSC00700.html

I myself am new here but search up forward swept and see what you can come up with.

                  Re: Running exhaust forward?

The smiley-face idea just doesnt do it for me... I am not looking to have the exhaust exit forward... just run forward from the block to the front of the engine, then down under the engine to exit the way that any other car does - out the rear. (I really hope that suggestion was a joke)

Thanks Highline Highlife... the link you attached is exactly what I may attempt to do. I would really like to find some block hugger manifolds that had the down pipe at the center cylinder... but if that wont work - at least I have an actual picture to go with the few dancing in my head.
