  • Header Gasket Question:

I'm one of the 3,000,000 people that have had problems with their pacesetters now, but now I feel like it's my fault. I used the gaskets supplied in the kit, when I probably should have put in something a little better.

Anyhoo, my headers are leaking, and about a 1.5" section of gasket is "blown out" on the drivers side header.

What's the easiest way to replace the gasket?
What's the best gasket that I can put in there, so this doesn't happen again? (I've been reading a little on Abbot Racing gaskets)

abbot gaskets and the only way to replace them is to take them off and slide the new gaskets in

I used the ones supplied as well, and they've held up for about 2 years now. Pathogen coated them with vaseline before installing them. Cant remember what it was for, but her explination sounded good, and they've held up.

        get the GM OE gaskets!!!!

they are multi layered steel, and by far the most superior gasket.
        they are available at ftpp.net

i had the problem forever. i finally bit the bullit and bought the 30 dollar abbott gaskets. they fit fine and have worked great so far. you need to call directly to order them i believe.

when replacing the gaskets, drop the exhaust at the hanger by the cat and take out the tunnell brace. then unbolt at the ypipe. that should give you plenty of room to take them out from underneath. clean them really good with an sos pad or a plastic scraper and put abbott's gaskets on. Also, theres no need for rtv or permatex with the abbott gaskets i was told. Good luck.

Sounds like abbott gaskets are the way to go. With locking header bolts? Wheres the cheapes place to get the bolts (stage 8)?

                    Re: Header Gasket Question:

You know your supposed to re-tighten the headers after ever 500 miles or so for the first 2000 miles right ? Header bolts work themselves loose when they "burn-in" so that might be why your gasket keeps getting blown out.

you'll need to check those bolts alot sooner than 500miles.
