  • Loud Tapping from headers ?

Ok, I have Pacesetter headers with the non metal gaskets, Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust, a hollowed out Cat, and just put in new Platinum tipped plugs.

I started up the car and noticed a tapping / raspy noise. Kind of like if you have a spark plug wire loose and it's arc'ing to the plug. I opened the hood in the dark and didn't see any sign of arc'ing from the plugs. The only thing I can think it would be is the EGR hookup on the header itself that I didn't connect becuase it seriously was not wanting to go back into it's home.

I made a thick aluminum plate to cover the hole, and the sound wasn't as prominent, but still there (just a whisper). The more you get on the throttle you can definetly tell that's not how it should sound ! After 1000 miles of driving the aluminum plate warped a little and the EGR wound up breathing out of it again and the noise is louder than ever.

The car didn't throw any SES lights with the EGR just sucking in air. No SES lights means its not the spark plugs either. The car actually seems to have lost a little in the bottom end. Top end tears it up though. Does anyone know anything about this ?

PS. I put the headers, hollow cat and plugs in at the same time.

Try some JB weld style liquid metal filler on the blockoff.

I would definitly put my vote on the EGR. A major culprit for leaks.

either EGR or header gasket... mine's doing the same thing at the gasket.

try lookin at the ball flange where the header connects to the y-pipe. i put in different bolts that were threaded all the way up and down, and put on locking nuts, and used air tool to tighten em down. i noticed a big difference when i did that. the bolts that come with the pacesetters to connect the flange are not threaded up enough in my opinion and dont seal well enough. that flange and the egr are about a foot or less from each other, and one could easily drown out the other
