OMG! I never said it would give my v6 25 more hp!!
I did say that the NEW SSes are rated to have ABOUT ~25 more hp
Those ratings are not MINE!! They are GMs ratings!

and I already said that a ram-air hood wont gain me anything
but it is a good cold-air setup!

I have more mods than you, I'm better ;) not that I care about our v6s

I think the most important thing is to make sure the radiator heat doesnt get sucked up in the TB
I know ways of improving the SS hoods flow... wish I had gotten the Ultra-z instead

            Re: ram air

I believe it was 30 hp that SLP claimed for the SS/WS6 over a stock Z28 or T/A. And that extra horsepower comes from both the intake and exhaust. But just about any aftermarket intake and exhaust could claim the same gains.

I don't think ram-air makes a whole lot more difference, but it certainly can't hurt. IMO it is not worth spending $1,000 more on a functional ram-air hood and airbox to get a miniscule amount more of power over a traditional CAI. But if you're buying the hood for looks and can spend about the same as a CAI to get the functional airbox to go with it, well then why not?

Here's an interesting read about ram-air that sounds plausible. Basically they're saying it increases the volumetric efficiency of the intake system, just as porting/polishing and removing/minimizing restrictions does.

which just proves the whole point.

with all ram-air hoods (EVEN the Ultra-Z hood and T/A WS6 hood), the path to the throttle body is NOT a straight shot. The hoods direct air into the small opening at the front of the airbox, underneath the filter. The air must then go up past the filter, then straighten out again on it's way to the throttle body. And that's just with the '99+ cars. Angled TB cars are even less probable for ram air to work.

For it to have a chance of working, you'd need to have a direct path from scoop to TB, no interruptions.

                    Re: ram air

I have a 99 WS6. Ram air is basically for looks and suspension. The motor is underrated to start. Secondly the stock GM Ram Air hood has a restrictor plate on it limiting the amount of air comming in and directing it above the air box, basically keeping the engine bay cool. ( I have removed said restrictor plate, so now my air is more of a straight shot comming in. ) People think WS6 or SS means fast as ****, when in all reality the SS/WS6/Z28/Formula are almost all the same damn thing.

Seems no one has stated that all 4th gen F-bodies are bottom feeders, meaning we get majority of the air the car needs from the bottom!

if you ever noticed, on the '98-02s, the bottom of the airbox is blocked off. The air comes in from the front of the airbox. the air dam underneath the car is to force air past the radiator.

Ram air or not,if you introduce cooler air [outside]into your fuel mixture you will see a power increase !

                            Re: ram air

I read somewhere that the ram air on stock ws6's made 0.71 psi "boost" at 70 mph. I also read that as a very rough rule (not at all accurate for all cars) 1 psi = +/- 10 hp. So thats around 7 HP for the T/A's. its not huge, but its there...probably helps in conjuction with the free-er (sp?) flowing exhaust and intakes to make the "25 hp difference between T/a's and T/a WS6's"

Just my opinion, because on the other hand, the colder air being outside the hood is probably worth +/- 5 hp on its own. maybe this also contributes to the "25 hp" difference.

                              Re: ram air

there is no 25 HP difference. The engines all make the same amount of horsepower. GM ADVERTISED the cars as being "de-tuned" so that prospective base model Corvette buyers wouldn't think they could get basically the same car for $20K less. When they started adding the SS/Firehawk packages and the T/A WS6 package, they ADVERTISED horsepower increases to sell cars. In reality, all LS1's made 345 HP (this got bumped to 350 after the F-bodies went out of production.)

oooh. I cant afford a LS1 so i don't know much about them or the ss/ws6's ... makes sense though. If i could get a corvette powertrain for 20k less, i would...
