its just for weight and 1/4th more hp. same reason people run open headers at the track, save weight and a little more power up top.

and to gotchocmilk39, what size ( length ) sweet thunder? i have the 18" and its pretty loud still. mine is 3" inlet/outlet but they neck down to 2.5 core inside.

you dont HAVE to run them under the axle, you can fit 2.5" dual pipes over the axle where the stock exhuast goes, its just harder/takes longer. under the axle is faster and easyer, but if you dont do it right when you jack up the back-end and the suspension drops it might hit the pipes, keep that in mind when doing it. make sure theres no, or at least almost no load on the rear suspension.

as for muffler's, flowmaster chamber 1's sound nice, magnaflow have those magnapac's, borla's are nice but not cheap. id go with eaither 4 bullets, or 2 "real" mufflers, or even 2 bullets and 2 "real" muffler's.

I'm going with the 18inchers. I'm just hoping the cats will soften the sound but one reason I want to do this is that I want the loudness of the true duals

well my car with just a highflow cat and the rumbler with the sweet thunder wakes up my parents/brothers and sister when i start it. just so you know. but driving under 3000 its not bad at all, radio covers it all up easy at a normal volume. yours will be quite a bit louder, so if you have close neighbor's, or neibor's that will complain i'd add in another set of mufflers, or get 24" ones. the longer the muffler the deeper it will be, so 24" with bullets or 18" ST's at the back might be the ideal set-up.

mine only rasps around 3900 and above. when i first got it, it crackled and poped whenever i left off the gas. now its only when i romp on it and let off and dont upshift. i only have around 500-550 miles on mine though, usally around 1000 is when they sound good, it takes a while to burn in.
