  • Flowmaster Question

So, I am pretty sure I am going to go with a Flowmaster ste-up. My dad has the 80 series on his 2000 LS1 and I love the sound. My question is,.. while looking at the kits for the 3.8 I noticed there are two different ones. One kit has a resonator on the side of the pipe while the other dosen't. Which kit should I get and what is the purpose of the resonator. I have a 2000 camaro and am planning on running pacesetter headers and a high-flow cat. I am just looking full that deep aggressive sound. Thanks all.

      Re: Flowmaster Question

Personally I wouldnt do a flowmaster at all. They have the problem of robing power from what Ive read on many occassions. If you cant afford a Borla or another catback sytem and you must go with a Flowmaster then go with the resonator setup. It should sound fine. The resonator will also allow better flow and more sound than the muffler.

This being the case than. What would you all suggest for both performance and sound,... like i said earlier,.. i like the deep powerfull tone more than the loud and obnoxious. I'm in college so i can't afford a borla. And prices would also be great if you know them.

Any sound clips of a dynomax super-turbo,... the stick only has a 3.4 and it is only at idle. The price is right so its definately a possibility. How raspy is it? and what is the sound level comparable too? Im open to any suggestions.

The resonator doesn't allow better flow... That kit has a muffler as well. The non resonated kit is 3", the resonated kit is 2.5". What I did was get the 2.5" kit, ditched the resonator, and changed my cat to a highflow cat and a 3" s-pipe. It sounds really good, i get lots of compliments and i've recommended that setup to a lot of people that have liked it.

You could also go the route of taking off the cat completely as Ive done. That is if you dont have smog test in your state. The SLP loudmouth is a nice exhaust. Its stainless still and has a nice sound to it. Not sure on the price thought but chekc around and see.

                      Re: Flowmaster Question

yeah, i dont know what they are talking about when they say it robs power. That is complete BS. I have the 2.5in american thunder setup, cut the resonator out and put a 3inch S-pipe and I-Pipe back to the rear axle. Granted i have headers too, the exhaust system is flawless without going to an obnoxious non-muffled setup. In my opinion, it is the perfect balance of flow and back pressure. oh yeah, sounds mean as hell too.

The Flowmaster system with resonator adds 11 rear wheel horsepower. Who ever said it robbed power??

I have heard a lot of good things about the flowmaster,..and i love the sound of my fathers on his LS1,... what is the purpose of the resonator,.. is it to enhance sound,.. and does it add or detract from the performance. This kit is most likely the one I will go with, but im just asking so that I dont have anymore questions.

Most will tell you that the resonator is there to control rasp, however i disagree. I got rid of the resonator on mine, and it didnt get any rasp even without it, it just got a hell of a lot louder and deeper

Is it more beneficial to leave the resonator on? Why or why not?
