  • whisper lid installed last night

So my whisper lid arrived from Thunder Racing yesterday...I couldn't wait to put it on the car. Most of the install was easy (i'd already done it once before on my old car a couple years ago), but the grommet Whisper supplies for the IAT sensor is by far the biggest POS ever. It's way too small for the sensor. I struggled to get it on, but eventually it fit. Then I had to put it in the lid, which led to more trouble. The hole for the sensor is too small when the grommet is installed. I had to carve the hole a little larger, and also cut some material off of the grommet to make it fit. I don't understand why Whisper can't supply the correct-size grommet.

Anyway, as soon as I was finished, I took a little test drive. The car pulls harder now, nothing spectacular, but it's noticeable. It's also sounds louder and deeper from taking the air silencer off. Fit and finish is great (I got the carbon fiber version, because the regular version looks cheap to me). Now all I need to get is a K&N filter and the SSRA to finish it off.

I had the exact same issues with the grommet & hole. I took a uni-bit and made the hole bigger; and made one top-to-bottom slice on their grommet, then "wrapped" it around the IAT sensor, then put a very small hose-clamp around the grommet/IAT after putting it in the hole.

Then, one of the factory hold-down clamps wouldn't engage. My next step is to install an SLP CAIK, so hopefully that will rectify the fitment. I also removed the screen in front of the MAF, no trouble codes !

can you post some pictures of the carbon fiber lid?

i'm wondering if it looks like this

i wish i got the carbon fiber one instead. i think i might end up doing just that.
...then i'd have to drill a hole in it for my dry shot. bah..

              okay, to answer everyone's questions:

gugdathug - SSRA is the Austin Super Sucker Ram Air.

Homedog - I paid $138+shipping from Thunder Racing. This is by far the best deal out there for a carbon fiber lid.

BobDole - It looks exactly like that, with the exception of the offset outlet to the throttle body.

IMHO the SSRA is a better system (i.e. it will make more power) than SLP's, but Austin left out what I think are some important caveats:

                1. while it's true that a composite piece won't heat-soak like a steel piece, a stock motor usually likes the intake charge a little "warmer" -- unless you've done some re-programming, the IAT will tell the computer what air/fuel ratio's to run, and the computer will bump up against its limit of "authority" before any meaningful power gains are realized. Also, the matter of heat-soak is only an issue when you're at the track -- and even then, if you have enough time between passes (or use a bag of ice on top of the lid) you will cool off enough that heat-soak won't be a big deal.

                2. if you've got a daily driver, I don't know that you want your ram-air situated that low -- you'll likely pick up all sorts of debris which yes, won't get past the filter, but that channel might get clogged and you wouldn't know it.

What I did to get the gromet on was use just a little vaseline. Then I wiped it off when I got it in. Worked great.

Re: whisper lid installed last night

Does the SSRA hang down lower than an SLP ram air kit??

and is a Ram air kit not such a good idea for a daily driver??

                          waterlogging-possible?
