  • Got Flowmasters done. Now CAI?

    Car:
    2001 Pontiac Firebird V6 3.8L
    Only mod is Flowmasters cat-back.
    -------------------------------------
Alright so last weekend I headed to Miami to spend time with my family, so after all the Christmas craziness, I was heading back to my place and I just went "What the hell, let me just get this out of the way".

So i went to this muffler place I was told and got them. I know I was told to get Magnaflow instead of Flowmasters but it was more money and to be honest, I really like the sound.

At low RPM's it has a very nice V8-like rumble (Mine is a V6). At high RPM's it does kind of go Honda-style but to tell you the truth, Im happy with it. I wasnt expecting it to be so loud.

So this was my first mod to my car. At last it isnt stock anymore. I want to continue so I guess the next step should be a CAI. But which? I am fairly confused in this matter.

    Whats the diffence between:

Granatelli Motorsports High Flow Lid or even the one that SLP sells, its a lid too. I dont understand what they do though.

    and the:

K&N FIPK Gen II Air Intake Kit

    ???

Do both work the same? The K&N is double the cost of the first one and im unsure of what the first one does.

As of right now im leaning towards getting the K&N for $309 (cheapest I could find) but the price is holding me back and everytime i tell a friend im gonna do it, they say they got their for like 100-120$ and $300 is too much. Which I think the same.

I have been told to look in ebay and when i do the search and narrow it down to my car etc, theres only 2 CAI and they are $351 which are the same K&N I was talking about earlier that I found for $309. I havent found any "cheap" CAI in ebay as I had been told.

Other option would be to make a custom one. My dad works as a AC Tech and he works using some PVC pipes etc and I guess as a last result, we could make a custom one. Does anyone have a link to a very detailed guide? But I want to do this as a last result, if I could find something cheaper it would be better.

Sorry for the long post, any help will be greatly appreciated as I am very confused in this matter. Thanks.

300 dollars is expensive for a CAI.

The ones you posted are nice, but you can do free mods to the air box or buy one closer to 200 dollars. You can also always make your own. I'm not too keen on the '98 + Intakes so i'm sure somebody will come in and give you better answers

people get way too deep into cold air intake.....its really not that beneficial of a mod so basically anything aftermarket will do.

Read the stickies. I have never seen an aftermarket intake system that provides more HP or less than any other.
