  • How much will this change the sound?

I have a thought on how I want my exhaust to be, based on a previous car, but I am not sure if it will turn out the way I am expecting. I used to have a 92 Cavalier wagon, which had the 3.1v6. The engine was stock, going into a stock (2"?) exhaust with a highflow cat and a single flowmaster 50 series tucked right up underneath the bumper with no tailpipe. It was extremely loud and sound incredibly like a v8 (with barely any raspiness). (much more v8 like then my flowmaster 80 with bullet)

Do you think that I would get a similar sound on the camaro if I tucked a pair of 50s under the bumper with a tip on them to make 'em look proper? I am mainly wondering this as the engine is sitting in the proper direction now with some different twists and turns in the pipe layout. How much difference will that make in the sound?

Also, this may sound silly, but I seem to remember reading/hearing something about how a car/exhaust needs a minimum of 10" of pipe after the muffler to scavenage the gases and make the proper amound of power....is this some stupid nonsense or is there some truth in that statement?

        "3.1 cavy wagon sounded like a v8???"

Yea, absolutely! The mellowness and Delta Flow features of the 50-series, combined with however the paths of the exhaust pipes ran, and the fact that the muffler had no tailpipe or tip gave the system an incredible tone. It was everybit as v8 like as my Dad's 95 Mustang GT (he had flowmaster american thuders) and even louder.

"get a flowmaster 80 series dual outlet...sounds good most of the time, i've had a couple people ask what size v8 it has..."

I already have an 80-series, with a bullet muffler, and while it does sound good to me, all of my friends think it sounds funny because of the glass-pack bullet and aggressive 80-series tone. It does sound V8 like after driving for a bit, but at high speed, or when cold, or even sitting in the passenger seat, the car just sounds funny and raspy.

I am hoping the 50-series on my car, would sound like the 50series on the cavy. However, no one seems to know how the different turns in the pipes would effect the sound.

My few worries consists of would I melt the bumper if I had the mufflers mounted under them with just tips on the mufflers? My computer is programmed to belive that I still have a cat even though I don't. So if I added a highflow cat back on the car as on the cavy, what would happen then? How about replacing the bullet muffler, with a flowmaster delta flow race muffler? How about a single dual-out 50-series with one pipe longer then the other - how would that change the sound?

I wish we had a computer program or something that could model these changes and let us know what the new sound would be like! The exhaust shops in my area don't really know how the car would sound, and I am hoping some of you who had experience with different exhuast systems could offer some thoughts.

Yea, the glasspack is replacing the cat as a way to get rid of some of the raspiness present in the nature of our 3.4 engines. It seems to be fairly common on these boards, at least when I got it two years ago....
