whats the problem with taking the screen out? i mean sure it doesnt add any noticable power, but it still equates to less restricted airflow. theres no need for it to "straighten" out the airflow on the straight intake systems of '99 and up, so whats the problem? Ive been wanting to take mine out, especially because its dented for some reason? Noticed that when i put on my new intake system.
the reason you don't take it out is because it offers no real gain.

how the hell is something gonna get past the filter? and even if it does, this screen is not gonna stop it...
you've said it yourself...

something got past your filter, and your screen stopped it
haha wow... you guys really are adament about this idea... and its a good golf ball size dent...i dont think golf balls are getting into my intake haha. i talked to the guy i bought it from a little bit ago cause this thread got my curiosity going, and he said its beacuse he tried to take it off before, failed, and put it all back together, but dented it in the process.
the screen is not a filter...period. and ive got a performance book that says taking out the screen is worthwile. it does restrict airflow. you dont notice any hp gains between a normal filter and a K&N, but do people still do it? yes! mine is comming out. that dent has to be messing things up more than helping.
You seriously responded to a 9 month old thread like everyone is still in the room eagerly waiting your response? Nice and you reask a question in the same thread that has already been asked and answered.
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.
in a performance book i have about T/A's it says "The simple modification that should be performed to every MAF sensor is the gentle removal of the inside screen. GM obviously saw the light on this after a few years, because the '02 Z06 Corvette doesn't have a screen in the MAF. The screen is used to straighten out the air coming into it to minimize false airflow readings, but on the LS vehicles (also Series II 3800's) with straight intakes, the screen isn't required."
I took it out on my one car. no performance to notice. One on my camaro is dented i should take that one out. I think it is a gain, i want to polish the throttle body. my intake and heads are so why stop there.
I didnt think removing it even made a differance in power you can feel..we did it to our mustang gt and explorer and noticed nothing....maybe you are thinking there is more power in your head cause its not good for enough you can feel...well not that i know of
Then why did you take them out of all your vehicels ?
... because it is pointless and the off chance that something gets past your filter you aren't going to be happy. There is no reason to do this "mod" unless your running a liquid or gas through the screen or MAYBE running much more horsepower then half the people who ask about this mod are running.
There are tons of things you can do to your car that may not show any problems and don't show any benefits either. If you like doing something to your car that has no benefit and only allows for problems then by all means. Go you!
I wish people would stop acting like the TB screen is an engine internals shield. Is an air flow guider not a shield.
I removed mine for a day, and right after i did it, it seemed like the thorttle response got a little better, BUT it was after 10 more miles of driving that i noticed the gas pedal would react a little weird. When i hit the gas, it seemed like it would bog down for a split second then surge forward. Next day, i put it back in, back to normal again.
I'll say this, those screens are kind of sensitive, i almost broke it coming out, luckily i'm patient when working on my car.
I got a 98 when I took mine out when it was stock it didnt help anything. Actually made it worse for idleing and performance. Thanks to a nitrous backfire I dont have it anymore but with Abbott Stage 3 heads, GT3 cam, p&p intakes, headers, cai, 26lb. inj., and pcmforless tune it ran great.
