sorry about the dumb question. this should be fairly quick. i have a 2000 firebird with a CAI. (its the SLP one). and it gets my K/N air filter really dirty and, black. I took the filter out and blew it out with an air compressor. and im going to oil it before i put it back in. but i want to clean it good and get the black stuff out so it breathes better. anyone know the proper way to clean it really well?
I soak mine in warm water for 5 minutes, lightly scrub it with a soft brush, rinse it from the inside-out, let dry for 1 hour, then lightly spray WD-40 on the exterior surface.
Had the same filter for over 5 years now and no problems to report.
you just have to be sure not to coat it too heavily if i am not mistaken due to the fact that you can ruin your maf with a lot of those chemicals
Yeah, too much oil sprayed on the filter element and it can cause havoc on the intake's electrical components. I just lightly spray an even coat of WD-40 on the outside of the filter, then install it.
I use a K&N recharge kit. It's pretty cheap and can be bought at places like advance auto. Like hockeyman said I have heard of using WD-40 and know atleast one person who has done it with no problems.
Since the oil in the recharge kit lasts for like 15 oilings and the cleaner lasts about a half a cleaning, I buy quart spray bottles of the cleaner off the web.

Intake, exhaust, just about every suspension part, alum flywheel & ds, Turn One p/s pump and cooler
or you put it in a bucket of detergent and let it soak and then take it out and let dry. then spray k&n filter oil on it
you can also use the K&n cleaning kit
I strongly recommend you DON'T use an air compressor to blow all the gunk out. Use a brush, wet or dry next time. The compressed air will blow holes in the small fibers in the filter, and allow material to flow through the filter after that. Just a word of advice... And K&N Recharge Kit FTW... good stuff!
So my truck is finally getting some work done, after 17 years, Oil pressure sensor went out and it’s located under the lower intake manifold. Have to...
