I have a 1993 firebird 3.4, it is completely stock right now, and i've been saving like crazy to do some add ons in the spring. I am adding a K&N CAI, Flowmaster 80 series catback exhaust system, and a high flow cat. I realize you can only do so much with a 3.4 (from reading these posts frequently) I also don't want to do anything that costs too much or will be a waste on a car that has 88,000 k's on it. I'm asking for any advice you can give me about my upgrades. Also any ideas would be very very welcome.

Go for the Flowmaster for sure. The sound is great. As for the CAI, it is your choice. They look nice, but you will not feel any difference at all. However, with the exhaust you will hear the difference.

I also have a 3.4, and I am very pleased with it. It has lots of power, and drives great.

    Post your progress.

sure will, glad to hear the flowmaster is a good choice, i'm saddened to hear the CAI won't help much especially since it cost 180$, actually cheaper than any other price i found for it (i'm sure u will all say i should make one myself but i'd rather not honestly because i'm lazy and would probably find a way to set my car on fire) I hope the high flow cat will free up some restrictions in my exhaust, i'm not expecting a huge power change, but i would like to know if these additions will be noticeable in terms of accelaration and response...

Im not to sure about not really feeling anything with a CAI. I noticed some changes when I put mine on, it is an SLP CAI, and I noticed that the car ran a little smoother, and the takeoff power was a little better too. Plus what you do notice is the MPG that you get from it. Mine did go up, I think that the CAI is a great mod, and something you should persue! Good Luck!

Yeah the install can be a royal pain in the *** but, all I can say is just go slow, and follow the instructions. I kind of enjoyed it because I got a chance to clean out some things that I could not of normally got to!

              ever look into headers?

a cai intake WILL make a difference, and you can hear that just like the exhuast. and exhuast will make your gas milage go up too.

eh, i'm a noob and headers seem much too in depth for me right now, like i said, i know u can only get so much from a 3.4, i just want to feel some performance (and hear)

nothing short of forced induction, nitrous, an aggressive cam or radical gears will give you a real performance feel. There is not really anything about your car that will just open up your car with a bolt on

I think it's pretty cool to simply hear the whooshing of air going into it (the CAI, not the headers). And the slight increase in mpg doesn't hurt either.

Might as well buy the CAI, if you've got the money. Flowmaster 80 series  i've got one and love it. Get your RPO codes and see if a gear upgrade is in order, if you've got 3.08 - 3.23 gears lowering the ratio is a nice mod too.

You say 88,000 k's .. is that kilometers or are you just saying 88k (as in thousand)? Eitherway thats not bad for a 93, not bad at all.

                        Re: Noob in need

Will you notice this difference with any CAI, or does it need to be a good one like SLP or K&N? The reason I ask is because I see cheap ones on ebay all the time and I am wondering if they are any good or is it better to buy the more expensive name brand ones.

if you go to get rims i would suggest sticking to the factory size and getting something lighter than stock.i would save the money on the intake.but then again i am a noob too. lol

I bought mine off of ebay for lil over $60; came with the K&N conical filter too. I thought I noticed a difference, and so did my dad. It was a very slight diff, so might be psychological. But it sure seems to take off better than before.

A lot of people just go to home depot and make their own out of pvc piping and elbow joints. Seeing as its really just a filter and piping its not gonna make any difference... just for looks i guess.
