    Re: Back Pressure Myth

So are you saying the best thing is a variable diaphragm?

Explain this better please. I chose not to go to engineering school remember. ;)

wouldn't you get max flow with least resistance in the pipe?

      Re: Back Pressure Myth

I was discussing this with my dad and he brought up a good point. Having a larger diameter exhaust, the air cools down faster while flowing through your pipes...thus becoming more dense. Dense air is heavier and so is harder to push all the way out the entire exhaust system.

when my cut-out is open i feel like i lose low end tq...but when i shut it it seems like i get it back..is this possible or does it just seem that way?

it's been discussed. Your torque is still there, but moved up in the powerband. You do lose the torque in the low end, but the torque is still there, just not in the same RPM range.

            Re: Back Pressure Myth

after reading more into "exhaust scavenging", I think I get it. With the stock exhuast, your car is actually better at sucking the burnt up exhaust out of your cylinders at low RPM due to smaller diameter tubing. If you upgrade to a larger diameter tubing, your car will actually not scavenge exhaust out as well at low RPM, but will be MUCH better at scavenging exhaust out of your cylinders at high RPM. So you DO make more power, it's just at a higher range. I hope that's right, because I'll be confused as hell if it isn't. If this is wrong, someone correct me.

Oh...haha. Didn't see the post above mine earlier

              Re: Back Pressure Myth

this is when you have to ask yourself: is my car for the street or a dedicated drag car? then decide what size to get.

So I have an e-cutout. Are you guys saying that I should go off the line with it closed and go down the track with it open?

A buddy of mine had 02 SS and was consitantly slower with his cut out open.

And my car is consistantly faster. What's your point?

so having a stock 3.8 and then putting a 3-inch exhaust and high-flo cat on it would slow take-off noticibly? i have a stock y87 and was considering that setup but would i lose take-off (one of my car's biggest strengths)?

                                just my opinion..

backpressure is a myth with a proper setup.. if you have the power to support completely free flowing, then backpressure does not play a role. for example, the v8's can have true duals 3" with little bullet bufflers and their car can handle it w/o any major modifications..

if you did that on a close to stock v6, youd be in for some power loss.
