Well, since everyone and their grandmother in the V6 community is looking for the next thing to reduce some of the woes we face when ****ing around with our exhaust systems...well, i think i may have found something interesting concerning the awful popping ("wet farts" as some of us like to refer to them as) that happens when you let off the throttle at a high RPM and let the revs die down. First, i'll walk yall thru the various stages of my exhaust system:

Stock logs, stock cat, 2.5" Flowmaster 80 series
This is the setup my car had when I first got it...the popping was mild, nothing to really get worked up over

Stock logs, high flow cat, 3" Magnaflow
This is where the popping got bad...very noticeable, very frequent, and very embarrassing

ARHNA Cam, Pacesetter headers, high-flow cat, 3" magnaflow
The popping increased with severity, but decreased with frequency

ARHNA Cam, Pacesetter headers, high-flow cat, open manual cutout, 3" magnaflow
Yea, go ahead and call my car "Dr. Popalopolis"

ARHNA Cam, Pacesetter headers, gutted cat, closed manual cutout, 3" magnaflow
Alright, here's where things get interesting...with the cutout closed, all the popping either dissappeared or is serverly muted. I've taken it up to 4000 RPM, and let the RPMs die down till it almost stalled out...with my other exhaust setups, it woulda been popping like crazy the way down, but with this setup, nothing happened. Out of the 5 times i tried it, 4 times it never popped, and on one try it only popped once, and it was a very low/deep pop.
What I think may be happening is the closed cutout may be acting as a mini-resonator, like on the flowmaster V6 catbacks. So, should some rookie V6 guy's spend over a thousand dollars to eliminate the popping? Sure, if it bothers you that much...the goal of all the mods I listed was to go faster; the elimination of popping was just a happy side-effect

Don't get it twisted: my car still rasps like all the others.

popping is from unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust and igniting. when you let off the throttle, you have a lot of fuel that just went into the motor, but not as much air, causing a rich mix that doesn't get burned completely. ways to reduce this is a stronger ignition and tuning.

I would concur with that mantra, however, my car's tune and ignition components did not change when going from when my exhaust went from it's 4th form to it's current form

seems odd that with the gutted cat is poped LESS, i'd think it would be the other way around.

when i first got my rumbler on it popped all the time. after it got broken in a little it would still pop if i was cruising at 2,100-2,500RPMS and i let off completely. and it would loose its "tone" at around 3600 rpms ( above that it was just "BWAAAA" noises )

with the headers it doesnt pop untill im at 2800-3500RPMS and let off completely. and the tone still around untill around 4500.but above that it still goes " BWAAAA" and sound similair so a civic with a fart can.

ive gotten used to the popping, i shift at 2,000-2500 anyway.

a 93 3.4 with 2.5 flowmaster cat back and a Catco High flow cat (being put in very soon), what range of popping might I expect?

                    Between 2 and 3 P/ds at 3500+ rpm.

you'd probably be better off asking someone with experience modding a 3.4

You have an automatic, so you don't have to worry about exhaust popping. When you let off the gas the trans will upshift.
