  • Trying to move muffler, need some help...

Ok, here's the deal. My car is a Y87, so it already has dual exhaust. Im happy with the sound, so I don't really NEED to change out the exhaust system. However, I would like to have some nice tips that come all the way out the back, instead of turndowns. Unfortunately, the Y87 mufflers are mounted offset; that is to say, the distance from the tailpipes to the side of the bumper is not uniform on both sides. I took it to my mechanic, to see what could be done, and he told me that the only way to fix it without replacing the muffler is to push the pipe that connects the mufffler to the cats farther into the muffler; if I move it enough, the tailpipes will be even on both sides.

Now here's the problem: ater much trying, I managed to get the clamp off. However, the pipes are still stuck together and won't budge. I'm not sure if it would be wise to spray my exhaust pipes with WD-40, but that is all I can think of at the moment. What should I do? How can I get the pipe to go farther into the muffler when I can't get it to move at all in either direction?

    What should I do?

    Thanks for the help,
    Frank

you can spray them. but good luck getting it off. after they have been clamped together for so long they kinda rush together. it's a b@tch to get apart. why not just get a new flowmaster for 300 bucks and save the time and effort?

Well, I've thought about a whole new exhaust, but I'm sadly a poor 18 year old soon-to-be college student. Not to mention the fact that I NEED other things, such as tires and shocks. But, if worse comes to worst, I probably will just order a whole new system.

See, that's what I plan on doing. But the tips won't look right coming out the back, because they aren't even on both sides of the muffler. They are set about and inch or two to the left, because of the way the muffler is mounted. What I am trying to do is to move the muffler so that it is even, and then put the new tips on.

couldn't you just lengthen or shorten one tailpipe as it comes out of the muffler so everything is even?

go get some pb-blaster, flat head screw driver, and a hammer, and have a lot of patience, i just had to do this to a 91 mustang, so you can imagine in all those years how hard they were stuck

Leave it alone, its not worth the trouble trying to modify the stock y87 muffler. Just save your time and money, and get some better and more free flowing when you are ready.
