Re: straight pipes
I have a 3.4 with a straight pipe and a cat, and I love the way it sounds. Yes, it is loud, but its not a bad loud. Its very gutsy and deep. Rasp is a problem though, so I'm putting a muffler back on when I get my head swap and headers put on. Everyone tells me it sounds great, and more than a few people have been surprised when I've told them its just a 6. From what I understand, though, most people agree that the 3.4 sounds better than the 3.8, so that could be why most people on here don't like straight pipes.

back to the topic at hand, all the straight pipes do is take the place of a catalytic converter. they dont open up the exhaust like a cutout. it will sound different depending on what exhaust and other mods you have done to the car already.. for me. it didnt make much of a difference, however on most cars i think it would make it a bit louder but not much and a slightly different tone.. and the exhaust may smell a bit ;)Dave:

Re: straight pipes
i think theres some confusion on the term "straight pipes"
first, being that theres an S on the end of the word pipe, im going to say he meant just exhuast tubing and nothing else from Y pipe to tips. (no cat and no muffler)
dave on the other hand is talking about replacing the stock cat with a piece of pipe, hence "straight pipe", no S there, just one pipe.
so, to the OP, what exactly do you mean, getting rid of the cat? or getting rid of both the cat and the muffler?1998 bright red camaro ,M5 ,Y87 ,stock

Originally posted by Rune:
If it smells like a turd and looks like a turd, chances are its probably not a candy bar.

I think pay hit on the head there, i was thinking the op meant no muffler at all..

Re: straight pipes
im talking about eliminating cat and mufflers.
this stang i heard actually did had twin cats and twin pipes off of that with no mufflers and were connected with an H pipe. if its overly loud, would keeping the cat make it little more quiet?
