depending on the wording in NY statues, but generally any modification to your car is illegal...it's just a matter of getting caught/ticketed

You should be good on long Island because most of the cops are worried about all the imports and their exhausts. I got pulled over 6 times when I had my Honda Del Sol and not once with my Camaro and in my opinion the Camaro is much louder.
