I took my car to the shop today because id been having some rattles, i thought it was related to the flowmaster muffler i had installed. They said it was the cat and wanted to charge me 270 for a new one installed. I did a little research and found out about the 8yr/80000 mile emissions warranty through GM. My cars warranty started on 10/16/99 and it has 77k miles on it. They said theyd look at it and if it was the cat theyd replace it. Think they'll give me any sh** because it has a flowmaster muffler on it? Im hoping they take care of it

Re: Anyone have thier cat replaced by the dealer?
50 bux to put it on??? Man... I know places around here that will do it for 20 bux. Are you in high school? I don't know if your school is in session or if you can find a high school around there that has auto shop and they will usually weld it on for free if you buy the cat. I know my old high school put on some brakes for me last year for free... I just had to provide the brakes.

if you have never messed with the exhaust, the cat would be a great start and we can tell you how to do it. If you can't find a high school in your arear... you don't have to be in school, they look for people wanting work done all the time... then talk to some local car guys and find someone who can help you out. I think if you want to work on your car then this would be a great start and we can help you, but if you don't plan to mod much and just want to replace your stock cat then try to get the free one.

Re: Anyone have thier cat replaced by the dealer?
thanks for the help Josh, i was going out of town this weekend w/ my fiance, i didnt want to take my car because of this issue, but she threw a fit, so i went to autozone and bought a cheap OE one and ill get someplace to put it on before we leave on saturday
wish i would been able to plan this out so i could have gotten a hi flow and had that done, but alas, gotta make the fiance happy :)
oh, and on a side note, after talking to the dealership they said they had replaced a cat under warranty at 40,xxx miles, why would i need a cat so soon?
the only thing ive done is replace the muffler w/ a flowmaster, and i did that at 69k
car has 77k now and needs a new cat, is there an underying issue or are the stock cats sh**?
Thanks

Re: Anyone have thier cat replaced by the dealer?
They were upset with you because you modded the exhaust with flowmaster. Even if you mod your car and it doesn't effect the problem... they tend to get upset and not want to follow through on the warranty. You might be able to get them to put the one you have on. That way they don't pay for a cat and you get your warranty met with them putting it on for free. Maybe they will compromise with you

any reason as to why this car is going through cats so fast?

Re: Anyone have thier cat replaced by the dealer?
That not a GM warranty of 8 years/80,000 miles but a federal warranty. The dealership would have to change it if it was bad even though they allready changed it.
I had the stock cat changed on my Aztek with 79,XXX miles. They didn't give me any hassle either. They told me it would have been almost 800 bucks if I woulda had to pay for it.Originally posted by kalaI'll have buttsecks with Richard Simmons!
