    Re: Removed Silencer Box

Ya know, I wonder if somebody (like me) could make a spacer to mount the TB straight. I'd just have to get a piece of aluminum milled at an angle and cut the holes in it straight through. Well, I could have it done 3 different ways. Have it milled like I mentioned above, have it cast in Aluminum, or have it printed in our ABS Plastics rapid prototyper. It should work. I'll do a quick design in Inventor and show ya what I'm thinkin.

EDIT: If anybody would actually want me to do this, I could prolly have it done pretty easy this semester. I'd just need some measurements off a 98 car.

Meh, not really for me. I'm pretty good with AutoCAD and solid modeling and stuff. I've got my Drafting and Design degree, and with 1 more class I'll have the Mechanical Engineering stuff done.

That, plus the fact that I've already designed a couple spacers on there before, alot of the work is already done. I've got one that's just a TB Spacer that blocks off the coolant, one that's drilled/tapped for my nitrous nozzle (that I actually had machined out and used, works great), and 1 completely different design that works like the ZEX Perimeter Plate. I made the last one for my senior design class in the drafting program. After I finished the design, I prototyped it on our printer. Look up the Dimension BST 768, that's what we have. It's sweet. Printing takes a while though. Casting wont be a problem since one of my professors does about 4 weeks of it during one of his classes. I could have him cast it in aluminum based on the 3d plastic print.

I've almost got the spacer done on Inventor already.

Only problem I see is that the bolts got straight through the TB and the Intake on the same plane, and with this "adapter" I'm scheming about, that plane has to change. May not work afterall, but then again, I've only put an honest 5 minutes in this.

Ok, here's the quick design I did:

Took longer to upload it then it did to make it.

My attempt on the 1998 (sorry for the ****ty quality.. camera phone):

The dryer duct is tucked into the rubber connector to the air-lid. Hopefully it holds. I did notice it gets extremely hot.

I really don't want to ruin the poor air-lid. Unless you can guarantee me that it will be alright. =)

                  Why would you ruin it?

You think you will crack it while doing it? Did you even look at it?

All you do is take pliers/cutters, grab an inch or so, wiggle it to one side a little bit (you can feel it get weaker), go all the way down like this, then when you go to the end, tear the opposite direction and it comes off in one piece.. after the 1-3 fin you will be a pro.. you don't need to sand anything if you do it right.

My airbox doesn't feel one bit weaker also.

Yes, I was just worried it would crack. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. What's the advantage of removing the fins?

Tbh I did both at the same time so I don't know... But I know when I did that and removed silencer box there was a HUGE difference..

And if you think about it those baffles in there would be a pretty big difference because the air isn't slowed down. I don't know if this will be like an audible difference or some difference in the engine.. but it will make a difference.

My poor car is loud to begin with. I don't think I'll notice some extra noise coming from the engine bay. :dj:

not really "extra noise" it changes the whole tone of everything..

Alot deeper and throatier. Hard to explain.

When you get a whisper lid the ducting will fit alot better since it will go straight to the lid. Yours gets hot? Mine doesn't get hot at all, not even warm. My lid seems warmer then the ducting. Where did you get it?

Home Depot. Not a prime choice for me to pick up dryer ducting, but oh well. My lid on the other hand feels cold. It could be due to the fins defecting less air into the duct which keeps your hose cooler. The plastic hose that has the sensor on it feels pretty warm too.

How come we remove the fins on our air box for better air flor, but then use dryer ducting....thats not smooth and will disrupt air flow? whouldn't we find a way to stick with smooth?
