  • Clean Air Act...

i drive a 94 firebird and i live in st. louis. as of sept 1, 2007, they will be changing our emissions standards. soon, all 1995 and older gas powered vehicles will be exempt from emissions testing here in missouri.

so my question is, since my 'bird is no longer an emissions regulated vehicle, would it still be unlawful to gut or remove my cat?

    short answer, yes.

they can fail you if you dont have the cat on, but they will never know if you gut it

the thing is, i already gutted it. it clogged up real bad one day and backed up exhaust enough to blow up my EGR. my plan was to get a new cat by the time i had to get tested in 08, but now i don't have to. but i'm wondering if i can lawfully remove the cat and put a straight pipe in it's place.

it depends on where you are from, but here, that wouldnt fly, they would fail you, and probably give you very big fines for not having the cat on

I'm glad I live FL. I don't think they test at all here. Could be wrong though. heh...

There are no test anywhere in FL...
But no matter where you live. If your vehicle came with it, it is illegal to take it off, or tamper with it.

But no tests... hmmm... I say GUT IT! Police can still do visual inspections and if they dont see one, you could get screwed. So go with the gutting...

BTW: Meaty, how does you exhaust sound? Is it all factory?

st louis here. since you're obd I (pre 96) i think you can loose the cat. they dont test it so its not a problem.

If you want to know for sure, just call and ask... or look it up online somewhere.

i suppose that since the testing will now be in the hands of our local mechanics i'm gonna call and ask one of them when september rolls around.

I heard they were going to bring it back. I don't remember where I heard that but I thought I heard something about 09 they start or they will start with 09 models and on from there. Not sure but scary thought none the less.

since you dont need a cat for emmisions you could get away with gutting it like you did, but you will need it to pass saftey inspection unless you have "connections" at a shop that will pass your car without it. ya know what im sayin?

emission laws, what in tar nation is those?

here in Mississippi no one checks to see if you have a cat, i went to a muffler shop and was looking at the poster that says something about a $10,000 fine for not having it right behind the guy who was telling me how much to cut it off.

and i remember reading that in Fla the laws are about to be updated to be just like California.

Not only is it illegal to take it off, or tamper with it. If they find out you've had work done at a shop they will be fined also. It's a Class 3 Felony to tamper with emissions in FL.

Edit --> I was wrong... it's not a Cl 3 Felony... Which I remember reading, but I went and checked the 2007 FL Statutes and it's a 2nd degree misdemeanor. 316.2935 Air pollution control equipment; tampering prohibited; penalty.--
