  • Custom intake, give your input

Greetings from a new member

    I own a 2002 35th ed. 3.8l v6 camaro
I've been debating with myself and searching for countless days about ways to modify the intake system. For a start, I removed the silencer box and got a smooth coupler to fill in the space. Since then I've been looking for a cold air intake system, but I don't want to pay +200$ for such a simple modification. I wasn't really interested in the ram-air intake system, just because the air passageway in my mind is too slim.

Anyways, so I was bored last Saturday and decided to go down to Autozone and see what i could find...

    - Specter Carbon Fiber air filter
    - Flexible tubing
    around about 40$ all together

Tell me your opinion on if this is or isn't a worthy mod
    Thanks!

OMFG! It looks like a filter was slapped on the end of the dryer vent hose. That can't be helping the air move with all those bumps and ridges.

yeah and those two bends are > than 90 degrees...that cant help easy airflow...not to mention you are still pulling in hot air from the engine bay...

yea...hate to burst your bubble but a modified (removed resonator and smoothed filter box) would flow better than that

IMO get a cheap "Chrome Intakes" off ebay, make sure your getting a K&N Filter with it, and extend the kit down into the fenderwell to get some cooler air

yeah, thats probably your best bet...its smooth, it doesnt have huge angled bends, and its pulling in fairly ambient air. plus it looks better.

nice custom intake by the way :D

my mistake, i should have thought of that before

too bad i have a 98-02 intake, otherwise it would be easier to work with pipe wise.

Just guessing from you picture, diablopb434, it's a 3" pipe? Ignoring the massive bends, and the ribbed bellows, that's ~7sq inches of area. Even if it's 4" that's ~12.5" of surface area

There's a fellow I saw recently who made his own SSRA out of aluminum sheet for like $5. He said the opening to his airbox is 13" x 1.5" = 19.5 sq inches of area.

Just throwing that out there for you, the argument that those ram air style inlets are narrow... alot more surface area though then using a 3" pipe. I think you did a good job, great to be thinking like that and original. I like. :) But I am with the other fellas here, may try something a bit smoother and less sharp bends.

Re: Custom intake, give your input

yea...performance-wise, that's pretty terrible...Tons of bends, ridged intake tubing, filter in a hot-zone, no place for the IAT sensor to go. Nice try, tho

With that intake you've definitely slowed the speed of the air coming into your engine. Too many sharp turns and turbulence.

                      Not to mention its hideousness.

i'd be willing to bet your stock system flowed way better.

heres my custom intake.... ill sell it all for 60 bucks with filter and clamps, I got an air lid and CAI. Or you could go to autozone and get the stuff to build it urself, may cost a lil more.

Hey that intake prolly wont fit the angled TB of the 96 would it?
