Well I took off my muffler yesterday and am getting read to install a custom 2.5" cat back. The cat on the car is not stock, but it is not high flow(I dont think, was on there when I got it). Well I cut it off rite before it goes over the axle. I can tell I lost bottom end but around 3.5 or 4K RPMS the car starts to scream(picks up quicker). Anyways The question is, why does it sound so louder and deeper than my buddys who has no muffler on his 98 or 99(forget) 3.8?
I actually like how my car sounds with no muffler as far as tone goes, there less rasp than when the flowmaster was on there. But its way to loud so Imma get the magnaflow on there.

Hehe, I have a new cat as well which is non-highflow, stock manifolds, and a cutout on the stock pipes right before the axle. I know what you mean about the pickup in those rpms and the nice grumbling tone.

Only thing is I want to make mine louder still. ;)

Haha yeah, actually people say its not much louder than before, a little but I think it just sounds ungodly loud inside the car because the exhaust is exiting under the car.

I really doubt you lost a lot of torque, its more of a feeling, since the car is louder but your not going that much faster. I've been there before, every one of my cars I put an exhaust on I drove around without the muffler first. You will gain more up top though, that is true. Post some clips!
