I took mine off, but I doubt there's supposed to be dirt in it.

      Re: air pump ?

Are we talking about a little dust in it or a whole ton of dirt? But the answer is either way that you should not have any in the air injection system at all. I would say clean it up and when you put it on make sure it is sealed all around or just leave it off and close up the places where it connects up. I have not messed with one of those in a long time, so you might want to get some ideas from somone who has some more knowledge on the system.

          Do you have a 3.8 or a 3.4?

The 3.4L does not have an air pump. I know this because I have one.

The 3.4 auto does not have an AIR pump. The 3.4 5-speed does.

No the pump should not be filled with dirt. Sounds like you got a flood car. When a car gets submerged that silt and mud gets into everything, that's the only way I can think that dirt got in the AIR pump. It should be a sealed system, it draws air from the intake, (post-filter) and puts it in the exhaust.
