I am taking my time to search for my future mod: Headers, and high cat. But reducing excesive noise. I know guys that sound=flow. But if there's a way to keep as much high flow as possible, and reducing at least a little noise. Please give a look at this alternative:"car chemistry inserts": http://www.carchemistry.com/shop/ind...oduct_list&c=3

My question is: If mufflers just "muffle" the noise according to the law, why not taking off the muffler, cutting the pipe and putting this inserts right after the catalyc? There will be more flow this way.

"In street applications the inserts should be installed in the system after the catalytic converter and before the rear axle. The further back the inert is installed, the less effective they are at reducing sound"

Because there are laws regarding how loud your car can be, and what equipment it has to have...including mufflers.

Is it illegal to replace a muffler by another device that does the same function (reduce excesive noise) and have less back pressure (if that's the case)??

I'm sure some states have laws about exhaust equipment being in "factory location" (especially emissions stuff)... but i dont think there are any laws that say your car has to have a muffler per say... in fact i dont even think neon SRT's have mufflers.
