I just put my headers and new exhaust (TSP Rumbler) on and when I let it coast in gear it pops really loudly, like its backfiring. It did this before I put the headers on when I was running no muffler. I thought that the headers, no cat, and a muffler would make them stop, but it hasn't. Also, my old exhaust pipe had a huge hole right after the cat. I'm assuming thats where the popping was taking place. Anyone have any ideas what this could be or how to stop it?

Re: Popping or Backfiring
you just dont have enough back pressure, its not hurting your car any. if you dont like you, get a more restrictive exhasut

Re: Popping or Backfiring
I don't know if I'm explaining it correctly. I know that theres a normal amount of popping going on when you let off the throttle in a M5, but this is a huge pop. It sounds like a backfire. And it did it with my 2.5" system with a cat. I'm beginning to thing new plugs and wires, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any info or experience on this.

Re: Popping or Backfiring
Originally posted by Smoke PantherNo. Popping is from unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust and igniting. when you let off the throttle, you have a lot of fuel that just went into the motor, but not as much air, causing a rich mix that doesn't get burned completely. ways to reduce this is a stronger ignition and tuning.

Re: Popping or Backfiring
Mine does it too. It sounded okay with just a cat-back. Once I added cam and headers it is waay worse and snaps/cracks pretty loud. After a few seconds off-throttle the injectors shut off and it stops. I just try not to let it wind down from high rpm's and it's not as bad.1994 Firebird 3.4
15.65 @ 86.8
funkz.net/firebird
Timeslips

Re: Popping or Backfiring
ive got a friend that has an 04 gto and it pops... A LOT...
i kno the sound ur talking about
whenever he down****s it pops and snaps, its a mix between backpressure and the vehicle running too rich, example : he shoots flames out his exaughst once in a while
i hav a 3 inch pipe all the way back with no o2 sensors or a cat, but a delta flow muffler with a lil bit of engine work done, mine pops 2. if i had a tune it prob. wouldnt do it...

Re: Popping or Backfiring
Ehh, mine backfired yesterday when I went to crank it in the parking garage...scared me pretty good. Since it's never done that before I thought I had totally broken something. As for doing that in gear....no, just rasp and some slight popping. Like you said letting off the throttle slower seems to ease that. But since I jsut have a catback, your "pop" is prolly a lot louder than mine.
