Hey guys. I know tons about the engine, but not enough about exhaust. I have a 3.4 with stock exhaust right now. The cat is just about dead. It rattles and sounds terrible when I get high on the RPMs. I found a guy with a 3" Magnaflow cat. What's it going to take for me to install this? Do I need to redo everything from the cat back? I dont want to create a bottle neck. Do I have to have 3" piping from the cat all the way to the muffler? Just wondering what size muffler I will need because I found a guy with a 2.5" muffler, but I think that will create a bottle neck. Thanks for your help!
get a high flow cat that has an outlet that matches your y pipe in size and the other outlet should be 3" for the back part of the exhaust. U will need all 3 " piping all the way back to the tips or you will have a bottle neck, u can buy catback sets that come with everything from the cat back so u will need to buy a cat that fits the y pipe and your catback, even if that means you have to buy an adapter to make it fit.

Cool. Then maybe I can go with the Magnaflow cat and then a super 44 flowmaster? I heard they sound really good. Dont laugh if I sound completely rediculous. I just bought my car a month ago so I have a lot to learn. I appreciate your help! :o

Actually I got an 2.5" Magnaflow cat and a super 44 muffler. I got an o2 sim to be safe or you can (if it happens) the code cleared (the code being anything about a faulty cat or malfunctioning o2 sensor) at autozone. As for the exhaust sound, I'm pretty satisified. :naughty:
BTW I have a 3.8, but I don't think there is much of a sound difference between our motors that I can tell.

How loud is it? Do you happen to have a sound clip?
do u realize that the 44 series is considered more of a high pitched ricey kind of exhaust? most people go with the deeper 80 series.
Actually I disagree..see I had a 80 series muffler and it was too quiet and more raspy. With the 44, I noticed a good difference in tone and with the magnaflow high flow cat, I'm hearing less rasp.
I'll work on getting a sound clip or a video clip ASAP.
I had the high flow cat in when I had the 80 series BTW, to clear up any confusion.
The 3.4 stock Y pipe and cat are 2½" so that's what I would recommend to replace it. The intermediate pipe and muffler are 2¼" so a good upgrade would be to go with a 2½" cat-back. There is no sense going with a 3" exhaust on a pretty-much stock car.
Also the 3.4 does not need an O² sim since it only has 2 sensors in the manifolds.

I would agree on this.
My stock exhaust is 2.5" and I went with the same size for my magnaflow high flow cat.
I also heard at 3" for the cat, the SES goes off. Can anyone shine some light on that?

OK cool. Thats what I needed to know. I plan on doing some more mods, but that will be in the future. Im just trying to get her to look and sound decent for now.

If you could get a sound clip that would be awesome. One of the LT1 guys put a super 44 on his and it sounded awesome, but I wasnt sure on a 3.4 car.
