  • questioooon about mileaaage increases...

ok, so yea...gas prices suck...and i've gotten hints from family members i'ma be gettin a lil more for christmas as far as the wallet goes. This may sound like a (LAMER) idea to mod, but i wanna try to improve my car's mileage as much as possible...ya know, without replacin the 3.4 lol...i know a good flowing CAI and Exhaust will help the car breathe better, but will it help out in the mileage category enough to really justify the costs? i mean...to a high school student, every lil bit helps lol, but if it's only gonna be like 1 mpg, id rather just save my money...thanx in advance guys

air up your tires to the proper pressure, do an oil change, and keep your foot out of the throttle

assuming your car is all stock....

get some good aftermarket spark plugs and wires, i think the CAI would be worth it not only for mpg but also for performance.

if you did those three things it's possible to see maybe 1-2 mpg differnece, assuming you aren't stompin the gas at every stop sign =)

further down the road get better coil packs, catback, high flow cat, even headers i think help out mpg.

More Air allows for more combustion resulting in more power causing worse MPG.

Stick with the tune, plugs, wires, and a oil change.

^ just my .02 but... when my family got our camaro back in 95 it was getting 16-18 in town and 23-25 mpg on the interstate.

with my cold air intake and full exhaust i managed to get a best of 27 mpg IN TOWN! and 37 mpg on the highway.

i would say that i was doing it more for performance reasons however, it worked out that im getting AMAZING gas mileage now. unless i put my foot into the gas and then she (the car) gets all nutty on me.

coil packs won't help on the 3.4. Headers did not change my mileage, but I did a few other mods at the same time that could have negated the benefit.

Now.. hmm.. Shouldn't oil changes be done every 3-5k anyways? And.. "More Air allows for more combustion resulting in more power causing worse MPG." What?! I'll just assume you might have changed only a oil filter or two. Ok, getting better efficiency out of your fuel will NOT reduce your mileage. Anyways, your best bet would be to get a better intake and exhaust. Not only are they both easily installed (which means that saves you labor costs) but they improve your mileage and sound better. They'll also provide more performance when you want. Just try to keep your foot outta the gas if your intentions are to save money on fuel. Use that brake pedal as little as possible too. I can get across town just as fast as someone racing from light to light and sometimes when I get lucky, they're already there stopped at the light when I get there and still have momentum to blow by em in the lane over saving way more fuel than they are and getting somewhere faster. A little ironic. And yes, I totally use run-on sentences.

well, about the exhaust...i know our cars have 2.5 from the Y to the Cat, and then 2.25 to the back, and i have a flowmaster 80 welded to the stock pipe...would it even be worth anything to replace the stock 2.25 with 2.5?...i also have a hi-flo, installed right before i bought the car...dunno wut that does on stock pipe, but w/e lol

and yea...my car's in excellent shape for 206K...so i try to keep my foot out it, my mind's on Parts Longevity lol...ya know, until the honor students in their new Hondas start talkin bout the hippie in the old Camaro lol, then i feel like showin off a bit...

                    I totally agree with blizzard.
Using the brake pedal as little as possible makes you save a lot on fuel and parts.

Just to comfort you, I pay gasoline about 10$ per gallon (France).
And price is still on the way up

For an actual answer to the question the intake is the only thing that is really worth doing, and that is only on the 3.4 really. Intakes for the 3.4 can be made or had for dirt cheap and can slightly improve mileage. As for the exhaust chances are the initial cost of parts and install would take a VERY long time to pay for themselves let alone actually save you money. This is obviously not taking into account performance gains, strictly mpg's. An aluminum driveshaft might also be worthwhile if you get it on the cheap.
