    Re: New Exhaust

Oh, and RASP is caused by our firing order. As a cylinder is venting flammable exhaust gas, an adjacent one vents its gas in the form of a flame and re-ignites the exhaust gases, causing a "pop" sound. The only way to completely eliminate rasp is to run either A. super long tube headers, or B. true hex pipe (6 pipe) exhaust. that'd probably sound insane. I noticed rasp was worst when I ran stock exhaust manifolds where all the cylinders vented out through the same tiny little log pipe.

Anyway, I had a flowmaster exhaust on my car a long time ago. It sounded really nice at idle and below 2,500RPM. After about 3k my car sounded like a honda. It sounded better with an open cat imo.

Oh, there are two cylinders on a common crank journal, so no matter what, two cylinders hit top dead center simultaneously and the valves are controlled simultaneously as is the spark, causing both cylinders to fire at the same time.

Not sure what school you went to, but only HALF THE CYLINDERS fire in one rotation on a four stroke engine. That is why V8's fire 90* apart. So I would suggest you go back to school and shoot the teacher, After you remove your foot from your mouth.

The two cylinders on the same crank journal NEVER hit TDC at the same time. They are on different banks of the V. So if it's a 90* V8 TDC on those two cylinders are 90* apart. Now remove the other foot.

That is wrong. The banks are controlled by the same cylinder actuators, and each cylinder hits TDC simultaneously on one side of the engine, like in a Boxer engine but with only two cylinders. Once the actuators reach peak compression (TDC), the exhaust spools the driveshaft and the wheel turns one rotation for every 3.42 rotations of the engine, in fourth gear, in a 3.42:1 differential setup.

It seems you are an advocate for violence, asking me to inject a bullet into the teacher's mucous membranes causing permanent muscularneuro damage and promoting an early death. you, my son, are the spawn of God's arch-nemesis, and that is no other than Dr. Frederick Walter Disney, Esq.

Its all funny, but I've highlighted the best part.

And you forgot to factor in transmission ratios.

And only one piston on each bank hits TDC. On a V6 its usually (if not always) 1 & 4, 3 & 6, 2 & 5 that hit TDC at the same time. If you'll notice they are all on opposite sides of the crank. (so while cylinder 1 is on its compression stroke, cylinder 4 is exhausting)

And those actuators are called connecting rods.

So, Dr. Textbook, you may want to think about getting your head outta the books for a second and climbing under a hood.

Sounds like a turbo but I dont think that's what he meant.

And this thread continues to take a downward spiral. :)

I only revived the thread in the first place because I was considering the Magnaflow exhaust and wanted to hear the negatives of the Flowmaster before I made the final purchase. Next time I'll just let the dead threads stay dead. Hah!

It all comes down to what YOU want your car to sound like. Not what someone else thinks your car should sound like.
Buy the one your happy with and you can afford.
