Please tell me the last time the federal government did smog inspections?
Its just like medical marijuana, its legal in some of the states but its illegal by federal standards.

So like i said, for cars 98 and older (in MAINE only) you can get away with not having a cat in your car because they dont test for it, look for it, or smell for it.

A cop can look for it anytime they pull you over and IF they so desire can railroad you on it. I was just giving you some FYI but clearly you didn't need it so I apologize on giving you some general info. Feel free to go run some open headers and then bend some valves, all the cool kids are doing it.

You are absolutely correct... Likely, no. Once again we're talking about maine. No where else. Think about it... There is no reason for them to check (again here in maine) because maine backs no law that necessatates them to look under there...

Example... Medical Marijuana is legal in maine, A cop pulls you over an you have an ounce of weed on you. You show the paperwork stating its legal for you to have it. Local cop does nothing because legally, he can't... FBI pulls you over (unlikely i know) in Maine and you have all the paperwork showing its legal for you to have the same ounce sitting in your car. You still get arrested because its illegal to be in possession federally speaking.

Apply this logic to your exhaust. Local cop pulls you over for speeding. You rev you engine once or twice letting the officer know you have open headers. With maines new law stating your exhaust can be as loud as you want. Why would the officer waste his time under your car? When theres no law to direct him to it.. See what i mean now? If not shame on me!!

I have full exhaust. :wavey: Thank you though.
I was never cool as a kid.

An I'm sorry for thread jacking!! But this was a good discussion. No?!
And thank you crushed for you CONSTRUCTIVE critism . I wish more people like you knew how to come back with a valid point, and express it in a none aggressive way... Myself, I'm young an still learning :)

local and state PD can enforce federal laws, if they so choose to

TN state in metro areas (Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, etc) checks once a year. They make you drive through a smog inspection station and they do a physical check with a mirror on a stick to make sure the cat is there and is in good shape.

What's funny about the testing process is they connect a computer to the OBD port on cars to get the smog info directly from the computer. I wonder if there's a way to fool that process. ;)
