  • Hole in my Cat

Hi I have a 98 Firebird with a Magnaflow cat back exhaust. My original cat has developed a small hole just above the side seam towards the drive shaft side. My service engine light is now on!

Can I weld in a Magnaflow cat at $70 or will I have problems with my SES. I notice that the Magnaflow cat has the same size inlet as outlet. I think I remeber that the OEM is like 3" going in and 2.5" coming out.

Anyone have experience of this swap or can recommend an alternative. OEM is like big $$

    Thanks

    Vic

If your wanting to just replace the cat for cheapest possible, get the cat you wanted and take it to a shop. Any decent shop can get a reducer from the 3" to the 2.25" that is stock.

I recommend getting a diffrent cat back but that may not be an option for you.

          Re: Hole in my Cat

Everyone tends to recommend the Magnaflow Carsound you're looking at. I personally said screw it and took it out. Just deal with the lights until you can get a sim, or tuned out.

            Hey Big Brian 442,
Thanks, are you saying your car is OK with no SES issues, Given the full Magnaflow system. No need to tune out the SES, if so I think I will go this route.

On your car, would that be bright purple metallic I see, if so my car is the same color

            Thanks

              Re: Hole in my Cat

My car is fine with no SES issues. Yes it's one of 290 98 purple V6 cars or 462 total purple cars in 98.

                  Re: Hole in my Cat

For some reason.. I totally wouldn't JB weld a cat.... Out of context that is pretty great.

Yeah like RadRacer said about the SES light, if you have HP tuners you should know better. Otherwise if you want to go a much cheaper and easier route get a sim. I have one on my 02, hasn't failed me yet and very very easy to install. Just keep the wires away from your pipes.
