So, I have kinda been lookin at these trying to understand them and seeing if it is worth it on my car....am I the only one that thinks you could possibly lose power from these? like to me the design looks as if it would work like a hole in your exhaust system....not all the exhaust gasses are going out through the cut-out...some still goes through the muffler, so that cant make for a very smooth flow....I think the louder sound may have people fooled into thinking it makes you faster and gives you power?

I mean I could understand if it blocked the regular path then forced exahust out through the cut out when it was open, but this is not the case....

In terms of your smooth flow argument, the amount of exhaust gases going thru the rest of the catback is nominal, at most. Blocking passages would be the only thing to create turbulance and increase the backpressure, when talking about utilizing an open cutout. There are dyno sheets to prove an overall gain in HP

Think of a garden hose and pressure rather than aerodynamics with exhaust systems.

dont cutouts release the exhaust quicker and therefore letting less to go through the exhaust system and possibly reduce back pressure by quite a bit bc of the cutout....

          What's wrong with less backpressure?

A tiny tiny bit supposedly. When your cylinder is on the exhaust stroke, being that the exhaust valve is open and the cylinder is pressing the exhaust gasses out.. Wouldn't you want to make it easier for the cylinder to rise? If there is pressure back to the cylinder on the exhaust stroke that would in turn prevent the crank from turning as well and so forth on through the drivetrain eventually ending up at your wheels. Also, you would want to expell burnt gasses and fuel easier so you get a nice clean efficient burn on the next compression stroke. That's the conclusion I've come to at least. Don't quote me on that because I've not researched it any further than what each stroke does. I've got an idea why you would want that tiny *** bit of back pressure but it'd be real hard for me to explain and I already have a hard enough time talking normally.

lol gotcha....makes sense but all this back and forth banter i hear about back pressure has kept me confused...it all makes sense that u need some but when ppl talk about putting a cutout or 3" exhaust their is always some ppl saying that u need back pressure and ull lose performance if u go that way...

Installing a cutout will not put you past the threshold of needed backpressure

Common sense is often more valuable than someone else's theories. But about the cut-out. I will have one here shortly before the end of my turbo install and I'm looking forward to it.

                      Re: exhaust cut outs

Ok the whole point/idea of "needing just enough backpressure", is that you have the optimum amount of backpressure (changes at different RPMs obviously) to get the exhaust out of the engine as fast as possible. Not too much so it puts unneeded stress on the engine, and not so little that it has no flow, aka just free flowing.. picture blowing up a bounce house or something to that effect with your mouth.. yeah.. that's not very good. Where with too much backpressure would be like blowing through a 1/2" diameter, 100ft hose.. You basically want the middle ground.

As for the cutout (if it's electric) you can open it as much or as little as you like. I keep mine just cracked open. Just enough so that I can feel a difference, and it has a nice sound with no rasp because of the stock muffler. So I can basically be stock sounding and very quiet, or very loud and raspy, or anywhere in between. Mainly, it's good if you are going to be idling and want to be loud, you open the cutout all the way, and then when you want to take off fast, just close it so it's cracked open, to get better low end, and sound (IE don't sound like you have a fartcan or something).

how do cutouts sound on V6's? im looking into getting one also, i know they sound amazing on a V8, but what about on our cars?

not good unless you have longtube headers.

It depends on the setup of the entire car. If it's stock internal/half bolt-on, it'll sound pretty terrible. If it's full bolt-on, it could sound alright. If it's had internal work done, it'll sound better.

Even stock, it will sound good partially open. Wide open it will sound like ***.
